Unhappy MSD Coil, Ballast resistor???

I just got a new MSD blaster 2 coil and instructions say it must be used with the MSD ballast resistor if still running stock ignition??

Does that sound right???

No...the ballast resistor is not needed on our cars.

Yep, I second that - I've been using the msd blaster coil as is for some weeks now and have had no problems what so ever.

I think the MSD coil is a little smaller than stock so you might have to wrap something around it to get it to fit into the stock bracket.

Did you feel any difference in performance?

The MSD blaster coil will be of no benefit if the stock coil works perfectly.

The blaster works fine for me, but the size is smaller than stock - I have yet to find a suitable way to secure it without it getting too hot...if anyone using one has suggestions (I have no way to fab something) I'm open to hearing them! Other than that, for less money than a stock replacement (summit has 'em for $40), I can't fault it...I got the anti-vibration one, for nodiscernable reason other than price, and it's been fine except the fitment issues.

If you use the Blaster Coil with a CDI ignitor, you can run it without a ballast resistor. However, if you hook it up in the stock inductive configuration, you'd want to install a ballast or else it'll overheat; especially if you do any extended full-throttle usage like DE and track events.

Danno -
Could this be the cause of my elusive car cutting-out problems after extended hot weather driving????

It's only happened a few times, but each of those times it's been hot outside, and after I'd been driving for awhile. The car sputter, misses, then dies. I put on the gas, nothing happens, then it sputters a few times more. I pull over to the side of the road, it sputters, then stalls. I let it cool down, then she fires back up again and I drive away, runs like a charm.

I have an MSD Blaster 2 coil. Should I be putting the stock coil back in, or buy this MSD ballast resistor?

Jason,
Check out Skips tech-session on installing an MSD system in his 944.

http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index...x_v2&id=87&c=4

He includes a photo of some 1/4" foam adhesive that he wrapped around the MSD coil, allowing it to be bolted back into the stock bracket with no slippage.

Um, I'm baffled by Danno's comments. Dave at Lindsey said NO ballast was needed in stock configuration. Am I now to understand that ballast may be needed (particularly if I live in FL) under certain conditions? That would REALLY p*ss me off. Any other input on this?
Cool on the foam tape, I found many adhesive based products 'melted' in the heat of the engine bay (I am working on a ceramic coated exhaust heat shield, but in the interrim)...hopefully that would hold up.

I just put a few rounds of tape around it to make it fit better in the stock location. Haven't checked how it holds up...

So far the longest track session I've done was ~40 minutes. How do I know if it's overheating or not??

Sami - I have no idea if that's the cause of my intermittent problem. I'd love for it to be the problem, but I really don't know. I've taken out the DME and re-soldered a bunch of connections, replaced the TPS, replaced the DME relay, problem still happens. Problem is, it only happens once in awhile, and it goes away after I let the car cool down for a few minutes, so it's very difficult to diagnose. I'm hoping for some more feedback from Danno on this one.

" Dave at Lindsey said NO ballast was needed in stock configuration."

He also doesn't think ballasts are needed for injectors that have only 1/2 the impedance of stock ones either. Impedance-matching is a common procedure to balance loads in an electrical circuit. Here's a discussion from some EE guys who knows their stuff (on 2nd page):

Ian, check the temp of the coil when the cut-out occurs. Also check the temperature of your DME box as well. Here's a thread:
