You can get an OE replacement coil from Pelican for $48.25. Just plug and play , no resistors to worry about. Is the Blaster Coil really, really better? Can't be too much cheaper than that I'd imagine.

Danno,

I'm not sure what the thread with the injectors has to do with the ignition coil. Why don't simply compare the specs of both the original and the MSD2 coil? Based on this you can make a profound conclusion whether or not someone has given the correct answer.

The specs of both coils are:

Original coil:
Primary resistance: 0.4 - 0.6 Ohms
Secundary resistance: 5 - 7.2 K Ohms
Remark in the Workshop manual says: "Without ballast resistors"

MSD 2 coil:
Primary resistance: 0.7 Ohms
Secundary resistance: 4.7 K Ohms

I believe the balast resistor is 0.8 Ohms, so maybe that a real EE guy can tell us whether or not this balast resistor is needed.

I'm guessing that most 0.8 ohm resistors from Rat Shack won't be able to handle that kind of current.

I'm no expert on coils, but if the ballast resistor is used to match the primary resistance, you won't need a resistor.

I was kinda curious what MSD would say so I emailed their tech line and asked "if I wanted to run an MSD Blaster high vibration coil in my 86 944 turbo would I need a ballast resistor". Here's what I got back:
---------------SNIP---------------------
Dear Sir,

If this is going to be used on an electronic ignition system and not on a points style distributor then no resistor is needed.

Thanks,

MSD Tech
---------------SNIP---------------------

That's free advice so to speak so take it for what it's worth.

Weird. I'm not using stock wires, but the ones I have fit my stock coil just fine, and I didn't have any trouble when I swapped in the blaster coil later on... How exactly does it not fit? Does it even feel like it's going..?

It fits on, but then wants to slide off, upwards. It will not click or set in place. Looks like the tower on the stock coil is straight up and down and the Blaster tower gradually gets wider at the bottom, so the boot maybe is being pushed back up. So it fits, but won;t lock in place, gradually works itself loose.

Hmm....i sold my old car so i'm going off of memory here, but I beleive that I had to squeeze the crimp a bit to get it fit in there. If you play with the wire a bit I think you'll be able to get it in there snugly.

Ok,I tried to spread the "prongs" in the coil wire to get them fit tighter, maybe I will try squeezing them.
