Default 60-1 Hifi thoughts on a 951

So, I have a lead on a Turbonetics 60-1 for my 951. I have read some older threads and people thoughts are the 60-1 HiFi was laggy, ie boosts starts around 35-3800rpm's and generally the turbo is too big for the 8v 2.5L engine.

Can I get anyone's thoughts that ran this or not, and why you would or wouldn't stick this turbo in your 951?

I have the vitesse MAF kit, sfr 2.5" intercooler pipes, with a dansk cat-back exhaust, WB02 sensor, but the downpipe and wastegate are still stock, so those would be the next buys before a full exhaust.

My plan is 16-18psi, keeping it conservative and looking to pump out 315-335hp on 93 pump gas.

Car is getting repainted in the next 2 weeks, 18 turbo twists bought and in the garage, now it's sorting out the go-fast goodies.

I've had that turbo for years - I love it. Without exhaust/intake leaks and a good tune, you will see 18psi by 3300rpm, positive pressure at anything above 2K, it hits hard, and sounds awesome. I've never wanted more. - it's a great fit for the 951 if you aren't fixated on the newest technology

I'll be running a 60-1 on my 3L 16V and expect to see even better results than the guys mounting them on 2.5L 8V cars. It's definitely a better option than the K26/8 that so many people go with.

I'm not, old tech is fine with me and my wallet. The one thing I did read was on the water pipe needs bending to fit around the hotside housing?

Either way, it's will be a definite upgrade from my 26/6, as long as the price is right.

From what I have read, these do have plenty of backpressure, but my budget is always a concern, along with a blown headgasket.

Head gasket within reasonable boost levels is a tuning not turbo issue .

Stay stock if you look for the least amount of problems, can't beat Porsches R&D even when it happened 30 + years ago.

I'll be running a 60-1 on my 3L 16V
Will this be on the 968 Aaron?, or are you swapping the 951?

I run the 60-1 hifi. At 18lbs. it makes about 330rwhp and at 22lbs. it makes 368 rwhp on E85 Rogue Tuning M-Tune. On the street it really pull hard but on the track I find it a little laggy under 3600 rpm.

This will be a street car, so running 18# boost 315-335hp sounds very reasonable with the 60-1 then.

Can you explain the water pipe mod? Is it just bending the pipe a tad more to fit clearances?

What other mods do you have to make the 330rwhp on your 944t other than Rogue's MAF? Trying to compare apples to apples.

No water pipe mod. My turbo is only oil cooled.

Engine is a 2.5 with Wossner pistons,Wossner rods, cross drilled crank, 3" exhaust, spec billet lightweight flywheel, stock O-ringed head, and SFR FMIC.

Ran a 60-1 HiFi in my car as well. 18psi @ ~3300rpm is a good estimate. I had a triple-K #8 hotside replica also. Its a bit of a lazy turbo and after looking at the compressor map many years ago i figured it would do much better at higher boost levels... which i didnt care to push. Always kept mine at 15psi.

My car made just under 300whp at 16psi with the usual bolt ons; 3" exhaust with no cat, Tial 38mm, Vitesse MAF, SFR FMIC. A bunch of other stuff done also but nothing that would add power. Infact if i remember right i sold v8killer something off my engine when i parted it..might of been the turbo or FMIC!

Its sort of inbetween the LR Super 61 and Super 53. My friend has a ball bearing Super61 and even untuned it spooled up way faster than my car ever did.

Like you said, its an old school turbo. I would only go for it if the price is right.

What's the right price? $400-$450 is my thought. Otherwise I will spend a little more a get something newer, just not looking to spend $900 right now on a turbo. Spending $$$ on a entire repaint, rims and tires just purchased, still would like to purchase the WG and Downpipe, gonna be buried in the car, but it will look great!

Picked up a S2 engine a while back, in the process of rebuilding it as a 16V turbo engine. 968 is still totally stock and the 2.5L engine out of the 951 will probably go up for sale when I drop in the new motor.
