I plan on doing something in between those two choices by having the head and block work done by a qualified shop and doing the fitting and assembly in my shop.

My goals with this build, what I call my "stage I" build, are moderate performance (~400hp) and endurance. I'm thinking along the lines of a 1991 944S2 Turbo Cup car, the one Porsche didn't build. After that I'll explore higher performance designs.

So far all of the build threads I've read (including yours BTW) have been oriented towards very high performance (500+ hp) designs and the designs themselves are mostly a parts list without much discussion of exactly why certain specifications were made, so I'm augmenting what I learn from those threads with several books on high performance 4 cylinder engine design and assembly.

So far I have to agree, I haven't stumbled on anything like the "step by step" procedures you find at places like Dwayne's Garage (928) or Clark's Garage (944). Still, there may be someone out there I haven't found so I keep looking.

Thanks for taking the time to write up your build thread (Pauly's go quicker project), it's already on my list

Good luck with your build. Just wanted to let you know that a 952 is a right hand drive 951, not a 944 Turbo S. Might save you some time when searching.

Thanks for that, it will. It's not like I made that up, it's apparently a very popular misconception. Can you verify the Turbo-S is in fact a 2.7L engine? I admit I've learned that little fact from hearsay also...

You know, I hate to go off topic on my own thread but if the Turbo-S != to the 952 as you say, was there ever a production 2.7L Turbo, or was the 2.7L head on the 944 S just a 2.5L with a different water neck? It seems like this should be obvious from literature but I haven't been able to nail it down yet.

I thought I knew there was a 2.5 N/A, 2.7 N/A, 2.7 Turbo and a 3.0 N/A. I thought the 2.5 was designated the 944 (N/A) and the 944 Turbo. Then the 944 S came out in a 2.7 liter N/A motor and the 944 Turbo S came out as a 2.7L Turbo. Later the 944 Turbo S was dropped and all of them were just called 944 Turbos. Then they released the 944 S2 as a 3.0 and developed the 968 while in the process of designing what never became the 944 S2 Turbo.

The real confusing part for me comes from the 944 S Turbo Cup cars. Some say they were originally based on the 2.5L engine, and the 944 S Turbos in production seem to have all been 2.5L, but others report the S Turbo Cup was an 8V 2.7. One owner reports a car from the Firehawk that was a 3.0L 16V Turbo, still designated a 944 Turbo S Cup. There must be an authoritative source out there somewhere, but then maybe they're all right...

Just a bit of confusing history that might let me arrange these different build threads into some coherent order. Most folks probably wouldn't care, but if there really was a consistent spec for the S Turbo Cup I'd like to know.

The 88 951s and 89 951 both had 2.5L engines.

There is no such animal known as a 2.7 turbo at least from the factory.

As fejjj says, no such thing as a 2.7ltr turbo. I think you maybe getting a bit of mixed info. The 968RS turbo had a 3ltr 8v motor but it used the head off the 8v 2.7ltr motor which had bigger valves than the 2.5ltr head. I believe the Firehawk series you're thinking about had 16v n/a motors in them and was only raced in North America. There was also no model of 944 S Turbo Cup car. It was just the Turbo Cup which was the 1st series of Cup racers by the factory. Then moved onto 911 variants although there was a bit of a time when you had both the 964 and 944 Cups on the same racetrack. There are videos around that you can find. Often very entertaining. Lot of body roll in those cars back then but they were well driven.

I'm in the process of building my 3.3l turbo. machine work is done, bottom end assembly is done and the old 2.5 is removed. Hopefully a couple more weekends and ill have the new motor installed. going with 2.7 head w/ turbo goodies. Still figuring out the turbo, but might just do a LR s65 for ease of install.

Hopefully will be a monster

No doubt I'm getting mixed info, I've been depending on sources like Wikipedia, Rennlist, eBay and DeutscheNine for descriptions and history of the Turbo Cups. There's a seller (recent enough to still be accessible on eBay) who claims his car was originally a 2.? liter engine, became a 3.0L 16V for Firehawk, and later was converted back to factory original. As an aside he was selling the car for $140,000. Tracing the provenance is difficult, but if you take the claims at face value Porsche may have fielded a 3.0L 16 valve car at some point in the Turbo Cup. Maybe it was French? I understand Porsche Germany may have ceased participation with the 944 as they began to focus on the 968 right around that time.

Thanks very much for your history. I'd like to discover as much as I can about the original 944 Turbo Cup homologations. Of course, I'd also like to stay current on private builds.

Are you doing the assembly? If you've got a thread started for your build I'd love to read it!

There was never a 3L 16v turbo from the factory. There was a 2.5L 16v that was raced at Le Mans. Not a Cup car.

According to Duke the 968 crank is not any lighter compared to the 944 S2 crank. So probably no weight savings to gain there.

Doubt it. But your customs dont need to know that they cost $1550. To untrained eye in unlabeled box protected by newspaper, they look like $100~200 new old stock pistons for some old tractor/snowmobile/excavator something.

It wasn't actually the 2.7 head. Porsche made a special 8v head for their 3 liter turbo motors -- similar to the 2.7 but actually didn't flow as well, reportedly to keep power within certain limits. Cue Raj....
