Default Valve Spring Installed Height

Can anyone tell the spec'd valve spring installed height? The manual uses a special tool which I do not have. TIA

how does the hight affect the valve? i thought it was the tension on the spring is what the shims are for. since all the shims are different sizes

Hi Shawn,

Page 15-17 of the 8V engine manual shows 41.0 MM +or- 0.5MM for both the intake and exhaust valve spring height. My shop has the nifty special tool so I have done it the easy way, but you should be able to sneak a small bore gauge in between the retainer and valve spring seating surface to measure the same.

Pauly, valve spring installed height is very important as if it were too short, coil bind may result, and if it were too great, there may not be enough spring tension. But you are correct in that it is also very important to measure actual valve spring tension if you can, and replace the valve springs if in doubt.

Or, like I said on the phone, cut and grind a wire hanger to fit vertically and measure it. Pretty easy

Sid, do you cut the wire to the specific length and use feeler gauges?

No, you cut the wire to fit tight vertically, then you pull it out and use a caliper. I usually do it close to a bench grinder to remove small amounts.

Anyone have the coil bind length for the stock inner and outer 8V springs?
