Default SOLID LIFTERS??

Not a whole lot to be found via search in here. Has anyone run Solids or have any experience with them? Seems like most people want to steer clear of them. All I understand is that they require shims and I believe maintenance. I know LR off a kit but I don't recall anyone running these on here.

Older cars use solid lifter. the 924 2.0L has solid lifters. Every now and then the lash caps need adjusting.
solid lifters cause more wear on the cam and various parts too.

for a street driven car i see no point. But i don't see a problem with a race car.

The only crap thing is if you search on google, all it is, is chev V8 push rod engines. not the same stuff we've got.

Id try do a search via google using "site:forums.rennlist.com inurl:944 turbo" but for some reason it's not working.
That's my way of searching rennlist.

Interesting old thread there. I'm pretty sure I'll stick to hydraulics but am interested in why they are seemingly such a pain to live with. There are also some lighter hydraulic tappets available for 16v head apparently. Need to look into these too.

What is your interest in solid lifters based on?
Solid lifters have the advantage of not being slightly squishy like the hydraulics and are a good bit lighter.
But the weight is only really an issue when you're spinning to higher RPMs and are spring-limited to putting the whole lifter/valve assembly back to closed, or you are trying to run softer springs to save a tiny amount of power being used to turn the camshaft against stiffer springs.

We know the oiling limitations of the 944 engine at least until dry-sumping is in place, and there's a decent range of spring options...do you really want to have to open it up once in a while to check clearances?

Why are they called lifters anyway? They don't lift anything. They push valves down. I'm just say'n....

My Mercedes has solid lifters from the factory and it's done 320k miles on them. That said, I don't know when they were last adjusted and now I believe I have a couple burnt exhaust valves causing low compression because of that. They do require maintenance, but for most of the people on this forum it wouldn't be an issue. You only have to adjust them if they're out of spec. Not sure how easy it would be to check solid lifters in a 944 head, but it's stupid easy on the Merc.

Spencer this is for our race motor which we're hoping to convert to 16v. Springs, retainers, oiling etc are all fine in this regard.

Good point Tom.

Is this for a road or track car? Have you had to do any adjustment along the way? Is yours the LR version?

Here is a link to some pictures. My Mac book won't copy and paste pics. It's my street car.

When I started the project Race City track was 5 minutes from my house.....now its part of a new highway and city development. No more track.

Nice looking build! Assuming you haven't had to touch the lifters as of yet.

I ran solid lifters for a while in a 16v head. During that time I only drove it on the street so the they provided no benefit besides the cool factor. The cams were ground for racing, so it was actually a bit of a hindrance when in traffic. I went to stock cam followers when I switched back to a more street friendly cam grind.
With the 16v head, you'll only be dealing with valve float approaching 7k rpm, which will only really be noticeable when pulling to the top of third or fourth, and fifth if you're looking to break 200mph.

Have you got dyno charts from your 16v build?

I have not had to make any adjustments to my solids yet. Just a fun car
I pretty much put the 944 turbo and the 968 above any car out there as my preference.
I wanted to build something that was different so I chose to use solid lifters....plus when I picked the car up with only 40000km it had sat from the late 90's until i picked it up in 2008 and the lifters were really noisy.
