Your actual/typical foglight usage
Hi,
Just curious as to how you all actually use the fog lights on the 951.
Is it just an extra light for illuminating under the normal headlight beams?
Do you ever actually rely on these lights in fog conditions or do headlights suffice? I can't say I've ever found myself in poor enough weather that headlights don't work and if I did, I think I'd just park.
Please answer the poll!

I use them when the fog gets very thick. It helps to see road lines a few meters further.

I changed the wiring on mine so they come on with the ignition. Day time running lights.
All vehicles as of 90 in Canada are required to have daytime running lights so I decided to make mine that way.

Really, it's a bit of all the above reasons, but they earn their keep as Running Lights on the Freeway. If one Prius gets out of the way, or doesn't get in the way - paid for! Also works rather well when the Snow is falling fast and furious at night, keeps the back-scatter to a minimum. I have mine adjusted a little low an a bit wide for Fog Line work and Critter in the Brush avoidance. Not saving them for prosperity, if there's a perceived advantage, their on.

In the poor weather do you shut off the main headlights and just guide by foglight though?
I've driven my 944 in what I'd call a light snowstorm and driving-lights + pop-ups worked just fine. Definitely not a "white-out" though.
I am trying to gauge other experience to see if I would miss them for daily-driver road use if they were removed/disabled.

I guess it depends if you get much fog where you live. You're not really going to miss them until you run into thick fog at night or dawn, then you're really going to miss them. When I lived in Monterey, that was fairly regular.
From a styling perspective, they're an iconic part of the front end. Without them, it just looks like an RX-7 or a Probe.

I always leave the fogs on with the headlights. I do run them at dawn / dusk with no headlights.. mostly so to run them as 'markers'.
I dont drive the car much at night anymore but I was on a really dark two lane highway not too long ago heading to the track and used the driving lights. Very useful.. great focused beam on the tree lines so i could keep an eye out for deer. I think that was the first time i ever used them for the intended purpose. I think the driving lights improve the look of the lights also.. gets rid of the cheesy chrome reflector!

But do you actually shut off headlights and fly by foglights only?

Stock they can help in extreme weather. I'd say the most important reason for having them is so other drivers see you. The 2 round bug eyes with factory bulbs don't project far. I've had people pullout in front of me. I now have hids but I keep the fogs on all the time when using parking or head lights just to be seen

As DRLs with the light switch in the parking light position. I were more motivated I would change the wiring to make them come on automatically with the ignition (and off with the headlights). One thing I don't know is whether the flashing feature still works with the fogs on in the parking light position. Never checked it.
I have never noticed any visibility difference with the fog lights in fog. But I am convinced my car is invisible to other drivers, so perhaps the DRLs help.

I use mine when the head lights are on.
Not sure about the US cars, but on mine, i have "parker" lights which are very dim and stay on while the headlights are on. And it doesn't look good with dim lights. so the fog lights over take the parker lights.
DRLs are illegal in australia unless it came standard.
