And a lot of the people that end up at their door don't even know that they could be saving money. Porsche parts must be expensive.

If you want to buy an engine locally, call EASY in Emeryville.

I have a 2.7 liter block, with crank, and pistons, rods, etc. no head. You can use everything off you turbo motor and put it onto this setup. You will have a 2.7 turbo motor, you do not need to change the pistons but can change out your turbo rods for the stock oem ones. this will give you a nice torque and around 300 rwh with your basic k26 turbo running stock boost. It can be turned up higher with more boost and tune etc. let me know,
Mike
let me know if you need pics.
$1500.00 shipped.

I'd worry that the compression ratio of the stock 2.7 pistons are too high for a turbo engine.

If they aren't I'll be looking under the bench for the pistons I took out of my 2.7...

Curious - if he swapped out the 2.7 rods with the stock 2.5 turbo rods, would that lower the compression (enough)?

No, they are the same stroke and same rod length.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you all again for your informative comments and various proposals.

I'm almost definitely going to go with a used short block instead of have mine bored, sleeved, and getting new pistons. Also I think the safest and least expensive way to go is to find a good used 2.5L turbo short block. I may have found a 1988 Turbo S block, which would be perfect for my car as it too is an ’88 Turbo S, so the numbers would be matching as well. I am waiting on the seller to let me know though.

In the meantime I have tried to contact Lart several times, however I never got a response to my emails. And today I called Easy in Emeryville but they do not have any 944 engines available at the moment. I am hesitating to get in touch with PartsHeaven.com since from what I have read in the comments here they seem outrageously priced. I guess it doesn’t cost anything to ask, so I might get in touch with them tomorrow.

Also I did get some information regarding the local engine that has been bored to 101.60mm and comes with new JE pistons and rings. The seller tells me that it is not sleeved but the pistons are coated. Not too sure about this one. I think I would prefer the block above. What do you guys think?

x 968tcab - I appreciate the offer. It is tempting, but I think I prefer not to upgrade my car any further with more power and torque. I think with a 2.5L it has more than enough to put me into trouble (and it has). Thank you, though.

I am looking regularly on eBay and Craigslist for good used blocks and will post my findings here.

As always I would appreciate any comments, leads, or suggestions from you all.

Thanks.
Igor

What is your timeframe? I'm going to be pulling my engine out of my race car after a few weeks, and changing to an NA (either 968 or 944S, TBD). Engine will have fewer than 500 miles since a lower end rebuild (all new bearings - rods, mains, balance shafts), seals, belts, rollers, water pump........had only 2% leakdown so I did not pull off the head. Turbo is an Evergreen hybrid 26/8 with clipped turbine and Garrett impeller.

Igor, unfortunately I don't have any m44/52 block available. Now I dont know if you are aware but any late 944na, 944S or 951 from 1987-1988 will do the job, for a straigh rebuilt IT DOESN'T have to be a m44/52, these guys know but they play dumb sometimes. best blocks I have ever seen come from the 1987-88 944S usually they are clean no scores or scratches. As I say unless you want to keep your car with matched factory # there is no need to use a turbo S m44/52 block.

So two months have passed and I am yet to find a good used 1987+ short block that I can simply swap in, without necessitating any machining work. So at this point I think I will have to bite the bullet and simply get my block bored and sleeved.

I contacted Clark’s Auto & Marine. Wes does work there any longer, but I spoke with Gary, who really seems to know his stuff. He quoted me about $1,000.00 for the work of decking, boring and installing the sleeves (I have to provide the sleeves). Is that a decent/normal price? If so I think I will go with him.

Also, I have to find the best bang for the buck kit - sleeves, pistons, rings - to install. What are you recommendations? Again, I don't want the best and most expensive kit, but the best compromise between cost and quality.

Thank you all for your help.
Cheers,
Igor

Like I said earlier, if you do end up sleeving I'll make you a killer deal on some forged JE pistons from my sleeved 951 block.
I don't know the exact measurement but I'm pretty sure it's a 101.6mm bore.

They seem to turn up quite a lot in varying conditions. Have you tried Pelican:

Thank you V2Rocket_aka944, I'll let you know for sure. Do the pistons come with ring and pins, and are they coated?

333pg333, yes, in these past two months I have been regularly checking rennlist, pelican, ebay and craigslist for a good 1987+ block. Nearly all the 944 blocks that come up are from 1983-1986, and the very very few 1987 ones I have found need work or are an entire engine (so I can't know the condition of the cylinders, and really don't want to risk it). I think I have found one some time ago on ebay that seems decent, but it was in the east and the seller would not ship.

I still have some time before having to get the engine completed, so my search continues, but at the moment it seems I will have to simply have mine bored and sleeved.

Any comments on the quoted price and suggestions on sleeves, pistons and rings (a part from V2Rocket_aka944's offer).

Thank you all again.
Igor
