Had an hour or so in the garage tonight and all but one of the head studs wound straight out by double nutting and some Plus Gas. The stubborn stud moved a couple of mm but rather than risk breaking it or stripping the thread I've left it to soak overnight. At least it's at the back of the block so easy to put some heat in if required.

Fingers crossed -- turn it in and out over and over for those few mm to break the remaining grip... Once they're all out, don't use a tap on the threads, but use a true thread chaser or cut a few groves down an old stud to act as one...

That's what I did it even for the ones that came out easy. What's the best way to pull the dowels ?

Not to be a tool junkie, but dowel pin pullers are the best way

The last head stud submitted and came out had to use a hot air gun to soften up the Loctite. The only dowl pin pullers I can find come as a kit with a slide hammer, a bit pricey for one job.

I pulled the studs on my 951 block with the Snap-On tool.

Made it super easy. I didn't need to use penetrants or heat at all.

Excuse the crap video, and the strong accent

I took them out with double nuts and it seems all went well. The last one (as usual) was a real PITA though..

See how you go with the water pump studs. They always seem to break, well at least one. I really think you need to heat the block to get these out.

I'll be using plenty of penetrant, heat and prayer .
