I only build 4340 axle shafts (pair) for 85.5-up manual trans cars.
You simply install Empi Type 2 CV's or GKN/Lobros 33 spline. From what I have seen they (CV's) hold up to 400rwhp (6.0 v8) without needing the upgraded chromoloy cages that Empi sells.
I can ship a pair of axle shafts for $385 US-48 only.

And Yes, high HP 944\51\48's are well known to blow out the drivers inner CV's because of the trans shifting over under heavy torque. I would suggest getting a semi solid trans mount to fix that problem as even a brand new rubber trans mount has too much movement...

Empi has the type 2 CV's with 0.75" ***** and chromoly cages as a complete unit..... #98-5084-B

I've always wondered if the Empi cage itself could be reto-fitted to the Porsche Type 4 CV (944).... their ***** are smaller lol.

Xschop, do you make that trans-mount pictured and if so, how much is it? I ordered a pair of EMPI CV Joint Half Shaft #90-6805. Are these the CV's that are equivalent to yours minus the chromoly shaft. Do you think the original shafts are stronger than the EMPI? Do you sell just the chromoly shafts?

Thanks.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! For the link. Man this might be the ticket. Also, nice price on the shafts. I may be contacting you about them.

As stated, I only build the 4340 shafts. I also build the trans mounts, have sold many. $225 shipped.
The 90-6805 shafts are not chromoly and will snap under heavy load at the smaller diameter stress risers. IMO they are designed that way to save the Vanagon trans. A factory 944/951 shaft has the same stress risers at the boot stays, but I've only seen the stress risers at the inner circlips snap on quite a few over the years.

OK, I'm a bit confused on this. It's of interest as I have a halfshaft (right side) with both boots ripped and a LOT of play in the half shaft. Can I simply replace the with the EMPI Vanagon Axle Assembly (pretty cheap on Parts Geek) or do I need to order the EMPI CV Joints and rebuild the 951 halfshaft?

Also what are the implications of the stock halfshaft/CV Joints on the left side and the EMPI parts on the right side?

Has anyone compared the A1 Cardone 66-7077 to the EMPI's? The Cardone is only $38.99 for the complete halfshaft.

FWIW car is stock and for the foreseeable future will not be tracked.

TIA

Michael

I've bolted the vanagon halfshafts in without mods. The shaft is weaker. I don't see why they wouldn't work for your application

How much vibration / drive train noise transmits into the cabin with this sort of mount?

Will the EMPI #98-5084-B CV joint fit the stock shaft for late ('89) cars?

Thx Blown944.

Would you change both or just the one that's bad? The good one feels VERY solid and the boots are in VERY good condition.

I have been running the VW Vanagon axles in my car for about two years now - no problems. The guy that originally posted all the information on the Vanagon axles got his panties in a bunch and removed all of his posts. I even questioned their use and he got all "wah wah" but in the end he was correct. I have probably ten track days on them of hard driving.

Nice thing about these axles is they are so cheap I have a spare which I bring with me to the track.

If this post jinxes me I will be sorely pissed!

Thx LuigiVampa. That is helpful info. Yep they are certainly cheap (comparativity.) Guess I'll just order a couple of them and put them in. It seems the worst case scenario is for about $50/halfshaft you're getting 2 brand new CV joints that could be removed and put on the stock Porsche axle. Although that would be a bit more work.

I've used the vanagon axles for about a year and a half with hard driving zero issues i picked mine up at advance auto a little more but life time warranty and they stocked them.
