Would coating the crown of the pistons have the same effect without the drawbacks of adding oil into the windage?

Porsche did funny things with release of info. The new model overview books that were available contained info you would not find anywhere else like piston squirter info. They had pressure release numbers and part numbers for replacement as well.

Why they didn't include this info anywhere else is beyond me but that is what they did. Lots of good information can be found. Those books are like the missing link sometimes. If you can find them I would buy them. They show up on Ebay from time to time.
