Default Low Ohm reading on reference sensor plug.

No start issue with no spark nor tach bounce. Per clarks, I tested the ohms on the harness plug for the speed and ref sensors. Speed was in spec, but reference was low (200-300 ohm).

Does this mean the reference wire back to the DME is bad, or is it the DME itself that has crapped out? I haven't taken the DME apart yet to look at the soldering.

Thanks.

Pulled the speed sensor and it's damaged ordered a new one. How can I prevent this from happening again after install?

Make sure it is gaped correctly. Clark's Garage had a procedure to set the gap using superglue and a washer. I have used that process several times.

Paul,

For a piece of mind, Replace both. They're annoying to replace and if you've replaced both, you can sleep better at night knowing there's no issues there at all. Even if one is good.

The wires get old and break causing no start issues (like what you've encountered)
I had the problem with a broken wire. Use to jiggle it and it worked. But i replaced right away.

To gap it, i did got the old sensor cut the wires and glued a washer to it (as per clarks garage) and let the sensor sit on the ring gear. so when you put the actual sensor in, the gap will be as thick as the washer.

Thanks guys. That's a good idea about using the old sensor to gap it. The end on mine may be too mangled for that, though.

I'll follow Clarks.

One more question...

Do I need to loosen/adjust the sensor bracket (6mm allen) before installing the new speed sensor with the temporary washer (per clarks)? Or wil the .08 mm washer be enough to create the necessary gap?

Note: I did not have to loosen or move the bracket at all to get my speed sensor out.

Thanks again.

-Paul

how will you create the gap if you do not loosen??

Per Clark's: 'The speed and reference sensors do not normally need adjustment even after replacement. Adjustment is only required if the sensor mounting bracket is removed or the mounting bracket locking bolt is inadvertently loosened.'

Please clarify, as I'm new to these cars. Thanks, Reno.

at least from the picture it looks like your ring gear chewed up the sensor. If that is the case then you need to loosen the bracket and re adj.

You need to loosen it. Not much, just enough so it can pivot up and down. When you install the sensor with the washer, you pivot the bracket so the washer touched the ring gear. then lock it up. Then take the sensor out.
Install the new sensor(s) and go from there.
