VW/Audi 07K (2.5L 20V I5) Swap Thread

I have a partially modified oil pan that I will install in my car next. I think there will be a way to make it work by strategically adding back some sheet metal pieces and probably a new pickup. Will post more info once I make progress.

Sounds good . I`m out for the evening , I have a road trip in the morning to deliver some parts to help pay for this swap

I was wondering something similar; you mentioned using the clutch plate from a 951 for this application. Will that plate have the same spline pattern to fit an NA 944? Because I'd rather use the stronger clutch if possible.

I can chime in here since most of my background is in VW and Audi . The Porsche clutch disc seems to be 1" 23 spline . I got that from the Centerforce website . The N/A car uses a smaller diameter disc than the turbo car ( N/A 228mm where the turbo is 240mm ) . VW introduced the 02M in 2002 , which is the 6 speed manual trans . It could also be found in the Audi TT 225 hp cars . The 20th GTI golfs , GLI jettas , Turbo S beetles . I have been trying to find the best bang for the buck clutch and flywheels , but so far I`m having a hard time finding the flywheel and the pressure plate as separate items .

I just spent a little time looking up fab parts for building a log style turbo manifold . 3/8" stainless flange , 3 schedule 10 stainless T fittings , 2 schedule 10 stainless 90s and a T3 flange weld flange in mild steel . About $190 for all the parts before shipping . Might be an option for some of the guys that have welding skills and facilities . Yes I am like a kid in a candy store right now , the possibilities are endless .

- 951 clutch disk (240 mm)
- SPEC aluminum flywheel and pressure plate made for a VW 1.8T with 6 speed 02M trans
- hydraulic slave TOB from Pontiac Solstice GXP
- starter from a VW 02M trans

I’m not quite ready yet, but I plan to have a website set up to sell the the exact SPEC clutch setup that will bolt in and work with my bellhousing (as well as all my other parts and iAbeds).

Oil pan progress
I test fitted a partially modified OE oil pan yesterday. It looks promising. I think there will be enough room to close it back in with aluminum sheet metal over top of the stock cross member and steering rack (without any spacers!). Take these pics with a grain of salt... very rough at this point. The stock 07K oil pickup just barely fits, but I’ll be modifying it anyway since I’ll be designing a much deeper sump with trap doors.

I’m getting ready to send this off for 3D printing, so double checking fitment first. I had to make a couple small adjustments to get the ports to line up perfectly, and had to shave a little material in a couple places, but overall it looks like it should work.
I had an idea as well... I wonder if the 3D printed one would be good enough for testing out the engine without any boost? I think the print will be like $2-300. I'll check to see if any of the materials they offer can hold up at 100 C.

Keep in mind that there will be a pilot bearing adapter needed. The 944 driveshaft will not reach the pilot hole in the end of the 07K crank. I have already designed an adapter that bolts onto the SPEC aluminum flywheel and holds the pilot bearing in the correct position for the nose of 944 driveshaft. I’m not saying there aren’t other ways to skin this cat, but just beware that you might have to design and make your own pilot bearing adapter for it to work.

3d printing
My school has an advanced composites center that might do things like this, and I could possibly inquire about them having one made, however at that amount of effort I'd probably just end up doing it on my own printer.
Edit: Yes I know the stereolithographic process of 3d printing is different than injection molding, and could result in a weaker part, but I say it's worth a shot.
