What is the development like in terms of increased displacement? Any stroker cranks available? The fact that its an iron bore instantly caught my eye. It's a much smaller bore than our motors, which helps to raise the knock limit. How much room is left in the sidewalls to expand? Any convenient off the shelf pistons available with a bore larger than stock?

You could do the math to try and offset grind like the hybrid stroker, but you're piston speeds might get to fast at these kind of RPM's. Rods are $525/set for H-beam and $790/set for I-beam. Pistons are $840/set for JE custom spec. I also don't think you need it. Reposting the low-boost 07K dyno plot vs one of a 2.9L 24v VR6 with a similar turbo at the same boost and they are basically identical. The 07K makes the same horsepower/torque/spool at the same amount of boost with 0.4L less and is a good 100lbs lighter than the VR6 (and cheaper). It's the same pattern basically as 1.8T, so pretty much any FWD box can be hacked up. Some might need trimming at the top to clear the bulge. In the AWD application they shaved the top two mounting bolts off of an 01E to fit (Audi did the same thing on their race cars during the Group B days to speed up clutch changes). The other 1.8T 944 running around (Lemon's Car) went the other route and made an adapter plate for the 951 bellhousing. With the 07K you'd have to do a lot of trimming to get it to fit even with an adapter plate since the 951 bellhousing is so tall. |

Seriously, I think even with the 2.5L capacity there is a lot of potential available for this motor. For a track car it would be fine with such high rpms and some custom rods/pistons you could see some pretty decent power. The next thing to deal with would be the driveline. Damn I wish there was an easy sequential option for these cars that didn't cost the Earth. |

If you want DI, it would be better to go with the 2.0 FSI I4. And I don't think DI is quite there yet for high HP builds. |
These engines are crazy plentiful. I have one sitting on my shop flor. This swap will be a great build. I just picked up an A4 Avant with a 1.8t. Doing the measurements, the I5 is about 1" longer than the 1.8.
I imagine the audi guys will be swapping these in in no time at all. Please post specs of the bellhousing when you get there. I might be doing one of these down the road myself. |
Very cool. Will be watching this...might put me off V8s entirely if the torque comes on early enough.
