I love the five cylinder. drove an Audi 90 Quatro at 106 mph in a blizzard on the Maine Turnpike in 1990.

love this engine !!

I'm still amazed that not one euro automaker starting at the doorstep of Audi has never sold a 3.2~3.6 I-five crate engine to build to Tony G class of power.... what's up with this ? it would be such a fantastic engine for eighty-hundred thousand cars.... even those ancient Italian and Ferrari cars....

and after all, the euro car companies are really everyone's best friend's right?

right????

not like those evil American car manufacturers that hate the enthusiasts and would never lift a finger to offer big/massive power in a box at a reasonable cost.....

yes, alternative reality and double standards is a lot of bull**** in the eurosports car community.

Pulled the pan tonight after I got it on an engine stand. As suspected it's a cast crank (p/n 07K101L)

Looking at the layout of the oil sump, the pickup should be easy to relocate forward of the crossmember/steering rack. The issue that's more concerning is the bulge in the pan is where the oil pump is. That can't be relocated. Let's hope the engine doesn't sit any further forward, otherwise the crossmember will have to be modded to allow space for the oil pump.

Keep up the good work!

If you already have the engine and a spare 944 to fit it in fair enough. Not sure if you got the Audi S2 coupe in the US but in Europe it seems a lot easier to just uprate one of those and get the 4wd too.

The Audis basically have the engine completely in front of the front axle so handling is not really comparable to a 944..

maybe a 924 crossmember as well will fit :p

I know, a different setup but that didn't stop people raving about the RS2, and if you were putting out monster power 4WD traction may compensate for the weight distribution.

I've already got an Audi with a swapped engine (32V 4.2L V8 which will eventually get replaced with an S8 40V 4.2L V8 + a turbo). And sadly we didn't get the S2 or the RS2 in the USA (we got a much watered down version of the S2 and no B4 wagon). It is my fun street car whereas my 968 is more track oriented.3

I want a better engine in my 968 and feel this is a way to do it and at a cheaper cost than building the 951 engine. Not to mention the aural pleasure of an I5 exhaust note.

An Audi feature I never warmed to is the terribly inert steering feel. On the last tuned up '96 S6 I drove I couldn't help thinking it was purposedly designed over-assisted to compensate for the engine sitting ahead of the front axle.
IIRC Walter Röhrl commented on the Audi S1 Rally cars that he would steer the car sometimes more with the throttle than with the steering.

Yes. I suppose one could use this to then adapt to the torque tube but at $650 I don't see it as a leading option for myself.

I've been looking for this, thanks! I've got an 01E sitting in my garage, but this is easier.

On that note, one could use this as a turbo manifold. Would put the turbo nicely in front of the motor/shock tower. And it's already v-band!

Good plan, I've never been a fan of the S2/968 engine or the lack of soundtrack. Good luck with the build.

Would this be a good project to explore using an Audi transaxle and locating the clutch to the rear of the car?
