So no one knows this? I have done countless searches, asked Lart and others and everyone points me to the same threads I have already found...where no one says I used 6 inch here and 3 1/2 here etc.

you probably have to do some custom work, but i'll doubt you'll find a set with speakers in perfect condition after 25 years of usage

Ya know it's hard to admit, but I just changed out the foam surrounds in my replacement front Boston Acoustics speakers and can't remember the size of them...
Man that is scary
I do have some pictures though, and I found this thread which looks very informative...
I don't know if you have seen this one ..?

Oh, I just found the amazon order for the speaker surrounds.
They are 5 1/4 inch. I have the BA 751 from the 1988...
Love them, but I am sure you could probably do better today ?
I also suspect you may be able go to 5.5 inches there ??
Here are pictures of the speakers with new surrounds, and the second picture installed ..
You will notice I have the the small 3 inch blocked out (see here )
Hope that helps

I would if I had them...I would be doing an upgrade to these door cards and ditching the standard speakers.
Thanks for the replies. My hope was that I could install a DAudio component set in the enclosures, that will require some work I can see. Again, thanks.

I would have said the same thing. 5' 1/4 would fit. Something solid but not to robust (meaning depth).
I customized 6.5 shallow in the doors for more midbass. But it's honestly not worth the effort compared to a great 5 1/4. I recommend going to parts express and buying Dayton Audio. You can get a component setup that will sound excellent for under $100 for all four front speakers. It will compare to component speakers costing $400-$700 dollars plus. PM if you want help. I have done dozens of massive car stereo's for a great price. And used to work for California Audio Technology. A very high end Home Audio company.
I can help you setup a monster car stereo system for under $500 in speakers and all cost. Including Amp, Sub, And two set's of component speakers.

Working on this exact project myself.
I think this ties in very nicely with the 3D printing thread on the other 944 forum - a chance to build good adapters.
I am first getting some Focal TiS 1.5 tweeters as they seem very close to correct cutout diameter and the frame diameter looks small enough to stay under OEM tweeter grill. I will probably hand craft a thin wood mounting plate which will be on the same shape as the original tweeter and will mount in existing holes. Then will fit the Focal into this and see what I'm dealing with. Too many projects in flight to go after the speakers more than one at a time. Interestingly, on both doors the tweeter and midrange were blown and deteriorated, but the woofer in each look and sound as good as new.

The midrange speakers are 3", and unless someone knows of a supplier out there somewhere, the only drop-in replacements are from Porsche. Also worth noting, the 968 cabriolets had the 10 speaker door cards but they only had the 5.25" speakers, with the 3" hole blocked off from the factory. I ordered some replacements with the 968 cab PN and one had the plate molded in; the other had a plate screwed down.

Yes.
You could see them until I covered the back of the grills with thin blue felt.
I had to trim the bottom edge of the big grills or it would have sliced the woofer surrounds. The area between the two middle screw mounts is trimmed down as much as I can. The woofewr surrounds do touch the edge of the speaker grills but are not being damaged and it doesn't effect the sound quality(IMHO).
The tweeters were a fun project(Heavy dripping sarcasm). You can see the roughly eyeball shape of the metal surrounding them(under the grill). The metal is aluminum. Those surrounds started out as circles. I did two angled cuts on the top of the circle and two angled cuts on the bottom of the circle to get a rough eyeball shape and then I filed them the rest of the way to what you see. Then I got to do the other side. You can see the original shape in the last pic.
