Default Water pump gasket leaking

My water pump is leaking with a new gasket and I'm not sure why. I cleaned the block & pump very good and used a new gasket with no sealant. Upon pressure testing, I see coolant dripping from a few of the nuts. The gasket I used was green and felt a little waxy, not paper-ish like some of the other coolant gaskets. Any advice appreciated.

Is the pump new? I have had one where the impeller was not pressed in right and leaked. Had to return it. Also I use blue silicone on both sides of the gasket to seal it. Make sure it spins and impeller shaft does not have any play at all.

I did this like 3 yrs ago ... I cant remember what I did yesterday
I remember I used something on the WP studs/ bolts I think I used Loctite 572 ?? I didn't want to use the other Loctite as stated
by Clark's:

The factory manual has you install the water pump fasteners using Loctite 270. This is fine for the nuts. However, I prefer to not use it on the bolts as is increases the probability of stripping the bolts holes during the next removal.

Best of luck

Pump isn't new. I had to remove it to replace the thermostat. It spins fine with no play. Guess I'll pull it off again & use sealant. Oh the joys of 951 ownership lol.

From looking at various parts websites, it looks like some gaskets could be made from different materials based on who is selling. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

All the ones I have seen are made of a compacted cardboard ...
I bought my WP from Sunset so I assume its a Porsche Part
I have seen differences in Gaskets from on vendor to another
I saw a big difference between the cam tower gasket sold by Pelican and the Porsche one... The Porsche one was a thicker gasket ....

You can easily remove the thermostat with a special mini pair of snap ring pliers and not have to remove the pump from the car. I have done this a few times though it comes down to that special tool or utter frustration with that clip on the thermo.

Also one other point I wanted to mention.....
Seeing what a Royal PITA .....it is to pull the water pump
Most people just put in a new water pump ...
I realize its not cheap, but for all the work one needs to do to replace it, I would think it might be a wise investment ?
Just sayin'

I use permatex water pump gasket sealant. Never had a leak. use a very thin layer on both sides.

I am a firm believer in Hylomar, i use it on almost everything where its applicable.

Unfortunately it can be difficult to find at your local auto stores now that Permatex does not distribute it anymore. They do have a comparable product called Permashield (85420), from what ive read it is very similar to Hylomar.

The #1 reason i like this over almost everything else is it does not harden or dry. So cleanup is very easy if you ever need to disassemble.

+1 on hylomar, its a great product. Its worth noting there are 2 WP seals available. One is a plain black paper seal which needs to have a sealant used on both sides. The other green one which the OP stated he used is already treated with antileak and should be put on dry.

Thanks for the info guys! I tried for hours and couldn't get that damn thermostat snap ring off due to the position it was in. I tried little snap ring pliers & the special tool where you turn the ****. I don't think getting to the pump is hard at all. I can get all the way to the pump in 2 hrs but I've owned and been working on my car since 1999 so I've had lots of practice lol. Once I had the pump off, the thermostat was out in 30 seconds.

Originally I didn't put any sealant on the thin paper gasket I received which was green in color also. Just the bolts got sealant and it leaked. So I've ordered the pressed cardboard gasket and will use Permatex water pump sealant. Hopefully this time I'll have no leaks.
