Just a follow up note: I did pressure test the Mustang throttle body and it tested very well up to 25 psi. Actually the unit is much tighter than the 951 unit.

The unit has a pretty stiff primary spring and I gave it an extra rotation and that is the only spring I am using. This is working great.

Overall, the mod somewhat reminds me of the Nissan alternator in that it took quite a bit of fiddling and time to adapt but it is cheap and works great.

Good stuff.

I am contemplating using a dual throttle setup with my blower for noise control and might pick a Stang TB up just for that...then down the road, swap outright...

Thanks for the info! I'll order mine very soon as well.. What did you do with the TPS? Can you mount the original one or did you use the one that came with the Mustang one?

I adapted the 951 TPS. I will try to put up a few more picks.

Just found this thread....and I have been using the ford throttle body for years! Now that the 'secret' is out its a pretty easy mod, fill the old mounting holes with epoxy and drill new ones. I also shorten the throttle shaft for better clearance by the coolant reservoir.

A unintended plus is that you have to run the throttle body upside down so the Ford logo can't be seen!!

The other nice thing about this part is that brand new aftermarket versions are available as very reasonable prices.

The only down side, which applies to any larger throttle body, is that you can see full boost at very small throttle openings - this makes for an "on/off" throttle feel in mid rpms.

Chris:

Which aftermarket upgraded 4.6 TB would you recommend? Price doesn't bother me that much, more concerned with not knowing history of old TB. Just rebuilt my stock TB and the seals were shot. Would expect the same from boneyard TB. I will do a search on Summit, but would not mind your thoughts.

I was down at the junk yard today to get one of these ford tb. FYI the ford trucks with the 4.6l v8 have the same tb but without the ribs on the outside

Oh my. Few people here get it. Shawn does. Keep it up Shawn, and post your results. Those who encourage stock size TB's in high power applications need to do some more homework; or just read and understand Shawn's posts. There's good info there.

Here is a couple pics. There are a couple different throttle cam styles around. My 86 was a very early model (#162) and had a solid TB cam as shown in the picture which made mounting easier.
