Default alternator pulley key???

I need help.....
so i am in the middle of replacing my alternator on my 1986 944 turbo. the new alternator from Autozone does not come with the pulley installed. so during the belt pulley swap i noticed that my current one does not have a key/pin (woodruff?) to hold the fan blades and pulley locked onto the shaft. i have search everywhere to find one but come up empty. does anyone know where i could buy one. thanks in advance

I buy Woodruff keys from McMaster- Carr. I don't know if that'swaht you need, but here's a link:

my question is that it looks like a woodruff key will work to hold the pulley on the alternator shaft... But the finned fan blade and spacer/washer are keyed also. The woodruff key (halfmoon shape pin) would only hold the pulley from moving. Is there an additional key/pin or a special one for the finned blade part and washer?

They didn't use a woodruff key. Don't worry about it as it won't be an issue.

Chris- so you are saying no pin/key is used at all???(current setup) but what would cause it to turn. under load the pulley/fan blade, etc would spin freely on the shaft. The alternaror wouldnt rotate correctly and i would not get the proper voltage. This could also heat up the shaft up and cause major failure with belt coming off.

In over 20 years working on these cars I have not once found a woodruff key used. The pulley/fan are held in place when the nut on the shaft is tightened.

That's it. I know there is a place for a key and back in the day I actually installed a few but gave up worrying about it after a while. Have never had an issue due to it not being there. Go figure.

make sure all the washers and stuff are there and dont overtighten as it can make the fan bind on the housing. a quick hit with the impact wrench should make it tight enough

parts i have...starting from alternator out:
1) fin blade
2) large washer
3) pulley
4) locknut washer
5) nut
is anything missing? i assume that is the correct order of assembly? (that would be the reverse order when tear down) and the PET diagram is different that what i have.

I want to say the washer goes on first then the fan. It's been too long since I had one apart and even then it was not something I "needed" to remember. haha

battery was replaced today as well. when i disconnect the battery cables while the car is running... usually this will tell you if the alternator is bad or not depending on if the car dies or stays running. so the alternator is good but doesnt put out the voltage needed (~13.8). could this be a bad voltage regulator on the new alternator. or could it be a bad ground????

Are you looking at the gauge in the cluster? It tends to read low. I'd check at the battery.
