Default FS: 951 - 16v 2.8L 6-sp Nautic Blue

Also listed in Rennlist member to member classifieds.

Asking $13,500 OBO. 1987 Nautic Blue with Linen interior. 92,600 miles on body. Unique build with many OEM and aftermarket parts. This is also going on ebay, which I'll end if a Rennlister makes purchase here.

The car has been my weekend/DE car for the past 5 years. During my ownership, the engine was rebuilt, I recently added coilovers and Recaro Speed seats and G-Force 6-pt harnesses. Details as follows:

Engine: 16v 944S head mated to a 2.5L 951 block. 100.5mm custom Wossner pistons, manufactured for use with 16v 944S head. 944 S2 3.0L crank, providing increased stroke to 2.8L of displacement. Carillo rods. Engine built and resealed approximately 8,000 miles ago. Other enhancement includes Saichou Michi catch can, plumbed into MAF pipe ahead of turbo like the factory. New factory AOS also installed. Lindsey Racing 3X oil cooler. Other – Robby/Iceshark battery cable kit.

Turbo and boost control: Vitesse Racing stage 4 turbo, Tial 38mm wastegate, in single port mode currently, dual port available. Accuboost manual boost controller currently in the car under hood, but solenoid and instructions available to use the Vitesse Piggyback as an electronic boost controller.

Engine Management: Bosch DME with Vitesse Racing chipboard and MAF kit, with MAP sensor and the Vitesse Racing V-MAF+ version. Vitesse Racing piggyback computer and laptop provided with software. Monitoring by Zeitronix WB02 with LCD display.

Clutch/Trans: KEP stage 1 clutch and KEP clutch disk. No slipping, and very driveable/streetable. Lightened flywheel. 6-speed Audi-derived transmission (O1E) with limited-slip differential. This replaced the stock 5-sp 951 trans.

Suspension: Ground Control coilovers. Front motorsports struts are double-adjustable (rebound and compression) Koni shocks. 400 lb linear rate Eibach springs. Front has topmount Ground Control camber plates with strut brace. Rear are 4 position single adjustable rebound shocks with 250 lb linear rate helper springs and 27mm torsion bars. Rear spring plate bushings are Elephant Racing polybronze, and new torsion carrier bushings are Weltmeister polygraphite. Swaybars are 30mm 968 M030 front and 22mm Weltmeister adjustable rear. Recent corner balance and aggressive street alignment -2 front camber and -1.7 rear camber. Also, new 968 caster blocks and front control arm delrin bushings.

Brakes: 951S (928 S4) upgraded front brakes, and 951S rear brakes. Lindsey Racing backing plates with brake ducting up to behind bumper where factor air scoops were. Retains working factory fog lights.

Interior/Safety: brand new Recaro Speed seats, brand new G-Force 6-pt pro series harnesses, Redline Rennsport 4-point bolt-in harness/rollbar. Stock seatbelts retained for street use. G-force harness lap belts clip in and can be removed. Stock 8-way power seats in Linen leather available with asking price. If car buyer negotiates, Recaro's may be available separately, only if car sells without them.

Interior/Other: a-pillar 2 gauge pod with VDO oil temp and vacuum/boost gauges. JVC cd player/radio w/ aux input. Zeitronix LCD display. New visor clips – machined alum. New battery, 2 mo old.

Wheels: MY02 8x18f and 10x18r Carrera 5-spokes with Sumitomo tires. 17” 7 and 9” Carrera 10-spoke lightweights with Nitto NT-01 tires (2 DE weekends used). 18” 8 and 10 replica turbo twists with one DE Hoosier R6 rears and heat-cycled out fronts. New long Lindsey Racing wheels studs with open lug nuts. Wheels may also be a negotiating item, and will be for sale separately dependent on sale of car.

Items needing attention: seepage from oil pan gasket, AC recharge needed (already converted to 134A, just need a recharge). Cold startup requires some cranking and catching with accelerator to hold high idle until warmed about 90 seconds. Warm startup fires much more quickly, but still requires a slight 'catch' with the accelerator upon firing. Idle is smooth and fine once up to operating temperature. MAF wiring clip works fine, but have a replacement as current one got caught on headlight assembly. New harness goes with car. Rear wiper doesn't work, was planning to remove. Power side mirrors need fuse replaced. Front has some chips from DE use, very good considering a car this age. Front passenger side fender has a touched up spot at top where a prior owner rubbed with a tire and had taken off some paint.

Very clean car. Small minor issues it sounds like. How does it ride on the street? Any idea on how much power from this setup?

When the dampers are set softer, ride is ok, even on rough suburban Chicago roads. It's definitely tolerable, even with the 18" wheels. 17" are even more comfortable. I found the fronts really needed some firmness setting in order to properly dampen the springs. Once I found the balance, it was fine.

I had the car dyno'd on a dyno dynamics load dyno. At around 13 psi, it made 315hp/325tq at the wheels, but boost was bleeding off a bit. On the street, power comes on smoothly, very linear and wide powerband. I run 15psi on the street, so it likely has a bit more, butt dyno is fairly noticeable between 13 and 15 psi.

This is just a really fun weekend and DE car.

This may be the 01E from a 968. I don't have a ton of info on it as I purchased the car 5 yrs ago with the transmission already installed. This car had a writeup in Panorama and mentioned the "Audi-derived" 6-sp. I have seen the 4 rings stamped on the box, but don't have a pic of the part number. I can try to get that this weekend.

Sorry if I'm delayed in responding as I am very busy with work and family. Thank you for spreading the word on this car. I'm hoping to sell quickly.

The 944's had an Audi derived transmission too, the 016. If it's a 6spd 01E it's pretty much guaranteed to be the 968 one. They did make some select FWD 01E's for euro Audi TDI's, but those are rare and would require a lot of work to fit over the 968 01E (there are quite a few differences between the 968 and Audi 01E's)

There are several 01E FWD transmissions to choose from the VAG parts bin. They show up from time to time on ebay or elsewhere.

That's a great-looking car here, nice colour combination with an interesting and uncommon engine set up. GLWS.

Where are you in Chicago?

At this point I have zero intention of buying the car and certainly don't want to waste your time as a "tire kicker" but I'd love to come see the car and check it out...

Let me know if you guys are meeting up. I'll bring my car and we'll get his car sold really quick!

If only I didn't jump the gun on mine, I could have bought a finer example. But then I wouldn't know so much about my car!

I wish. One of the best looking cars around and very cool engine setup.
