Can you do this with the head in the car?

You could, just put some pressure ~15-20 psi into the cooling system to keep metal shavings out.

...now how are you going to get a drill between the firewall and head?

A small right angle drill with a short bit.

If the only thing off on the coolant system is the pump. You could slightly pressurize the coolant system with a compressor so the shavings blow out when you begin to drill through.

Bit of a strange and difficult task but it could be done.

I think though if you have a good shop vac you would easily suck out any shavings from drilling. Good shop vac's pull some pretty good suction. Any of the remaining coolant would easily get pulled out by a wet dry vac.

Doing this job really isn't a big deal. It doesn't have to be 'exactly' the same as LR's picture, so long as you drill into that back chamber that is being targeted. IIRC, it was about an inch in from the edges. That'll put you where you wanna be.

Where in Canada do you live?

I cheated guys I had a spare old head to practice with. and your right it does not have to be dead on the money like I thought. . at the end of the day I got it good. I spent good 30min rinsing with hose etc . no chance of anything being left in there. so good to go looks like

I just eyeballed it the best I could

I've never seen any air bubbles passing through the line so I'm not sure about how effective the vent itself is. It does make bleeding easier though.
