Default VW fox strut mounts

Anybody know if the 87-93 VW Fox mounts work on an 86 951? They seem like the early 944 mounts but it seems one can only buy the integrated cup/bearing and not the whole mounting plate arrangement. Can I just knock the old bearing out of my mounts and press these in and drive off into the sunset? Kinda hard to argue with 12 dollars a piece when I really have no need for camber plates. My car has 87+ style slanted mounts with the updated bearing.

I have a set in my 86 951. I bought them used from Rob (robstah) who used them previously in his 86 951 before converting to camber plates. I'm not sure exactly what year Fox they are from, but they are the complete assembly with the mounting plate and all.

Awesome! just what I wanted to hear. Partsgeek pictures show only a bearing. Guess I'll order some tonight!

Does anybody have some mounting plates then? The main reason I need new mounts is not the bearings, but the fact that the plates they mount on are bent. I assumed that was what you did with them Rob.

yes, running the fox bearings pressed into a set of early N/A plates with holes drilled to allow the centering stud on 87+ chassis to pass through the plate.

So to be clear you are running early mounts on a late car with a replacement fox bearing? The angle of the bearings is different on the early v late mounts. Did you also convert to early offset?

Did you have to modify the Fox bearings at all? Did you install the whole rubber assy?

Yes, early offset, the car is basically an 86 on an 87 frame. No modification needed to the bearing, i just pressed the entire thing in, rubber surround and all.

Got it! Just to make it clear to anyone browsing this thread, the early mounts shouldn't be fitted to late offset (87+) cars. They can be made to fit but the angle of the bearing inside the mount is wrong by about 4deg.
