Default Alusil honing services in So Cal.

It's getting harder and harder to find shops that will do this anymore....is there a "go to" shop in the San Diego area?

Thanks!

+1 ask for sergio at motorworks, also wholesale automotive machine in san diego, but motorworks specialty is german . If you need help assembling your motor I will be glad to be of service. I have built many 944 spec winning engines, street engines, wild turbo engines, and so forth. I am here for service or any advise on clearances and procedures.

eh

When I was playing with these engines, I (through a vendor) had them bore and hone twice. Both times it wasn't right. Both times it had to go back.

And in the end... for some reason... it's never the same as the factory bore finish. It never wears the same nor is it as durable.

For low horsepower engines, you can get away with a lot. But for engines making bigger power (somewhere over 350RWHP) things have to be really right. The finish has to be exact and things have to be very straight and true.

Just my experience.

I'd look elsewhere.

If that is the case TonyG, what would be a recommended place in CA, or elsewhere?

I have an a short block I want to tear into soon. Plan is to make it a 2.8 and high performance. I currently have a stock 2.5 on 18lbs boost with upgraded Turbo and everything else..

If it's for a turbo race car, forget it. Sleeve the engine. It will last a lot longer. Plus you have a much larger selection of pistons as well as easily made custom pistons. Also when it's time to rebuild, it will a trivial affair to either hone it or bore it using standard equipment by any competent machine shop.

For a street car, the last place I used that did the job correctly was back east and they are no in business. So I can't help you.

I'd agree with Tony in that if you're building a performance motor just dry sleeve it.

Any idea what they charge for a dry sleeve job?

I think most places charge $200-250 a cylinder for dry sleeves. 944Online will dry sleeve your block for $995.

When I looked into getting a block dry sleeved by a company I'd trust it was very pricey compared to going oversize on an Alusil setup. I haven't really decided either way but the 2nd option saves nearly £1k on machining and liners.

I think you might be dealing with UK prices vs US. Same for Down Under. Everything costs more outside of US. Labour is so much cheaper over there. A lot of services that are prohibitive in our countries are corner store cheap in the US. Sometimes dispiritingly so.

Very true, apart from the 2.7 engine and S2 crank I bought here just about everything 944 is cheaper in the US, strangely even Wossner pistons. If I was in the US I'd no doubt go for a Chris White linered block/piston setup. Quite frustrating when my Mum lives in Arizona.

Okay, I guess this brings up the question (maybe a new post) but, how many out there are legitimately pushing up to 350rwhp with the alusil bore and how long have they been running it? Maybe a poll is in line here...
