You'll get more of a response if you post in the "water cooled" section, rather than the Turbo/S section.

Blown motor doesnt tell us much
Did the timing belt break, Cam tensioner pads break

I dont see many "S" heads for sale so i believe finding a good one might be a problem.

The regular 944 heads are more available

Its an old german car so they are cheap to buy but expensive to maintain. Good luck on your search.

I believe everyone on a 944 forum is going to say "it's the BEST Car ever", what sets this forum apart is, we're telling the truth. Not the most HP, not the fastest, not the most inexpensive, not the most spacious, not the most luxurious, but, it IS the best Drivers Car for the buck.
Starting with a basket case is not recommended eather, the learning curve for a high tech Euro Sports Car require's some experience to avoid the pitfalls, the level of Design and Engineering takes some getting use to, especially if you only have domestic experience. Find one that was Loved, usually around $5k for a NA, = Normally Aspirated, then have a Pre Purchase Inspection done at a Porsche Shop. Better to learn about these Cars as you drive them, then to contemplate the mysteries from the wrong side of a Trouble Light.
btw, example, these Engine's have a Cylinder Coating for looooong life, you or your basic Machinist can't touch that.

Yeah dont buy a motor that you havent heard running. Assume anything you buy will need to be rebuilt. I wouldnt pay more than 300-500 for an NA motor Never priced an S motor. Turbo motors go for 800-1k

I'd get more info about the blown motor. Get an idea of how much it'll cost to fix it.

I'd say stay away unless you're a fool with money. With these cars it's generally better to pay a little more upfront for a good example than to buy a basket case that needs $5k in work just to make it reliable.

Unless you plan to do a V8 swap, then it's a very good idea.
BTW in which region is this car located?
