Lart may only have "4 cylinders" under his "hood" (if you know what i mean-- *cough* ***** envy *cough*), but he's been good to deal with for parts.

Lart is a stand up guy. We have heard time and time again how he has taken care of issues in the past to make things right with buyers.

IMHO, you buy used parts as is. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, I think most people would take a gamble at $200 for a transmission when a typical rebuild will run $2000-3000. Most sellers will back up the majority of their stuff, but things like engines and transmissions have a lot of things that can go wrong with them, IMHO they are sold as is. Want new...either rebuild or buy new and pay the price. Lart is a stand up guy, and IMHO has gone above and beyond to refund the money after the bad transaxle is returned.

Now with that being said, I've had a used transmission sitting next to my car for about 3 weeks also that I haven't had a chance to put in yet. If it is crap, that is the chance I took, but I would hate for someone to assume I installed it then blew it up because I've had it for 3 weeks.

I also have a saying around the shop that "The cheapest way always ends up being the most expensive way in the end." Never fails.

Also just want to chime in and say that Lart has always way surpassed my expectations when buying used parts and went out of his way to help me with an issue I had. I will always turn to him first for any random or hard to find parts I need. His reputation on this board is stellar for good reason. Hope the OP gets his car squared away.

I'll sell you my tranny out of my 86 turbo (non-LSD w cooling loop) for $900. It has 90k miles on it and work well. I replaced it with a limited slip AOR tranny.

I have to disagree with this, in principle--not about this specific transaction.

If I buy a transmission, differential, engine, whatever and it's advertised as "works great", "runs", etc, I'm going to expect a part that works and has basic functionality -- whether I pay $100 or $1000. I don't expect it to be misrepresented or lied to about it's condition. If the seller doesn't know, then he should say "unknown condition, as-is" and adjust price accordingly.

Of course the part will have wear on it, maybe make some weird noises, and maybe even blow up catastrophically in 1 month. That's understandable. **** happens.
But being mislead or outright lied to is unacceptable, and should not be tolerated as "just part of buying used parts." It's not only bad for the buyer, it hurts the marketplace as a whole and damages faith in the community.

As for the part just costing $200 as opposed to a $2000 new one, the price is not the only component of the cost. It takes a day or two to install something like this, and as someone with a fulltime job, those two weekend days are a hell of a lot more precious than a few hundred bucks to me.

To reiterate, I'm not talking about lart or saying he misrepresented the part or anything, I'm just talking in principle.

In this specific case I think it was just an unfortunate issue that wasn't obvious and nobody caught it and it's nobody's fault.
I appreciate that lart is willing to refund the money.

that's my $.02
