Cam timing info
Hey guys, So Im in the middle of making some repairs and part of that is doing a t-belt job and fixing the damaged cam collar that was installed on my car, While doing this im gonna play with some cam timing, I purchased 2 and 4 degree offset woodruff keys. Im gonna go with the 4 and see what happens.. also if Im correct turning the camshaft counterclock wise advances cam timing right? Anyway Feel free to add any info or correct anything

Sid is correct. Keep your cam gear "in-place", and rotate the camshaft clockwise to advance the cam.
So, your cam-key needs to be flipped from the picture, and then installed.

I have cam-keys. I got them from 928motorsports.
Yes, after seeing & feeling the results in my 944NA, I immediately went out and adjusted the 951. Advancing the timing picked-up low-end power, and made boost come on a little sooner. Definitely noticeable.

So wait.. Keeping the cam in place and turning the gear counterclockwise wouldn't that advance the cam? Which way does the cam spin when the engine is running, isn't it spinning clockwise?
Josh how Bad was the performance drop off at higher RPM? I'm thinking it won't be so bad as boost would kinda makeup for it

Well, yes you could rotate the gear counter-clockwise while keeping the cam in the same spot - that would also advance the cam (assuming you re-timed the motor correctly).
It just depends on how you look at it. In the end, you want the cam-gear to line up to the timing marks correctly, and the camshaft to be advanced clockwise, hence advancing the cam.
I don't notice any drop-off in higher RPM. Really I've never seen an 8-valve engine that doesn't peak by 6000rpm anyway. These engines are just not built for high-rpm.
