Default short shifters breaking

bought a schnell short shifter linkage over a year ago, broke after maybe 8,000 miles. called the place i bought it at and they sent me a new one at no cost to me. This new shifter lasted about a week (with just normal driving) before breaking in the exact same way.

Has anyone else had them break like this? Is it a quality issue? or is somehow my car putting too much stress on it?

I dont wan't to get another just to have it break on me. For now I've been using the stock linkage and its working just fine.

thanks in advance for any replies

Is it a quality issue?.......Likely. Schnell is a cheap chinese copy knockoff shifter....kinda answers that question. The good shifters were made by autothority and weltmeister, neither of which are still available to my knowledge.

Xschop make a good SSK. I have one on my car and it seems to be holding up well.

+1 on the XSchop SSK, it appears to be a very well made piece, and he's a RL'er.

I have the Schnell. It's a piece of junk. Shifting sucks....far too notchy. have to push hard to get it into gear.

Going to buy XSchops at some point.

I have one too. Its gotten less notchy, and so far no breakage issues.

Can you have it welded back on?

The schnell purchase was a mistake for me. As It broke off on the highway I coasted up an off ramp to a truck stop where I spent 2 hours threading miscellaneous bolts and clamps onto the shaft to secure it again. I think $400 is a good deal considering someone could drive over that piece of crap on the road and blow out a tire. The schnell is a dangerous POS.

I think I have one of these on my car... bought it a long time ago on ebay (~5 yrs) and its working okay.... There were a few "adjustments" that needed to be made right off the bat however (IIRC). I believe the divot for the set screw was in the wrong place, and I had to grind a bit off the rod end because it was hitting the transmission case in one of the gates (this will give you that notchy feeling btw).

I assume that piece was just pressed onto the rod end? Since there is a hole in the backside it looks like it's meant to be plug-welded once pressed on.

Granted the spherical rod end probably isn't the best of quality (mine has developed a tiny bit of play in the bearing). Modifying it right from the start sucks but you get what you pay for I guess!

I've made a delrin piece for the rear shifter linkage, did the job for me perfectly! Although a short shifter is very tempting, although i would want from XSchop as i've only heard good story's about those!
