Default 944 turbo motor?

Have Black 86 944 turbo, like most hobbies has been a money pit. Had a leaking head gasket and while off, found out the number two cylinder has serious scarring.
Looking for any opinions or suggestion. Took it to a local shop, they said 5 grand to fix the motor or 2500 for used one.
Can the motor be resleeved, honed out, etc? Open to any and all opinions and suggestion.
My funds are tight, may be selling her if.

Thank you

Least expensive route would be to get a new short block.

Sleeving and refinishing the bores are both viable options, but they can get costly.

Are you doing the work yourself, or do you need a shop to do it?

If you're a handy mechanic and can do the work yourself, pick up a decent short block and swap everything over. Shouldn't cost all that much

If you need a shop to fix it for you, IMO, it's not the car to have if you're a check-book mechanic on a tight budget. I don't say that to be mean, it's just a very expensive car to maintain if you have to pay a man $120/hr plus shop markup on parts.

Just my $0.02

sell car immediately! all i can say is i have a black 944 turbo bought it a year ago and still doesnt run. if u really like the car go through the motor. if u are on a tight budget sell it. my car had a oil leak on cam tower and rear main seal leak. fixed those. then the clutch master, dme, steering rack, headgasket all before i put 20 miles on it.

I usually would do the work my self, but time is not on my side. I looked at getting a short block from LindseyRacing any opinions or suggestions on that?
Also have a 86 944 n/a in garage that I'm working on.
Thanks for advise

May be able to help you out. I'm local, too. What is your timeframe? And what part of Knoxville? I'm in Farragut.

Oh, and by the way, there are some really bad shops in town. Will not air the dirty lanundry publicly, but one guy has opened and closed several businesses, each time taking large deposits from people, then never doing the work. Another place supposedly honed the cylinders on a 944, which blew up shortly after. Racer's Edge is local - just do a quick search on here to learn about their reputation (for full disclosure, I'm indirectly affiliated with it, as its owner is a business parter of mine in another company).

Put it back together with the new head gasket and enjoy the car.

Same deal happened to me: blown head gasket, big scoring in #3, shop recommends rebuild. I had them just button it up and then raced it for 5 years. My shop said "good call". Unless you want perfection, the engine can tolerate an amazing amount of scoring.

How bad was your scoring? Did you have a lot of blow by?
Would the blow by cause head gasket to blow?

Multiple scores that you could catch a nail on big time. I would get blow by when the engine was very hot and it would then use oil, although the amount of usage was still reasonable (1/4 quart in a half-hour track session). The oil would get dirty fairly quickly, so I would change it after every weekend at the track. In normal driving, the engine did not use oil in significant amounts.

Cylinder scoring has no effect on the head gasket lifetime.

I was happy to live with a little loss of power and more frequent oil changes to save a ton of money.
