Default Fan resistors on an '86

So, I was reading a bunch of old posts today, and I came across this one: https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...-everyone.html. I figured, well, that looks more productive than reading old posts all day... I'll go have a look at that. Went out to the garage, pulled up the blower cover and... The resistors aren't there... and there doesn't seem to be any evidence of them ever having been there.

Are they in a different place on an '86? Am I missing something?

TIA!

Pretty sure they are behind the dash on the '86, i think with the glove box out you can see them but not 100% sure.

Thanks! I'll go stand on my head a little later to verify

You can get to them without removing the dash. It is tough, but doable.

Good to know!

I think I'll happily do nothing about it at this time, as I have no reason to believe anything is wrong with them. I'd just figured to do some easy preventative maintenance, but I'll save this one for some time when I've got a good reason to be under the dash that far.

I also have an 86, and once did exactly what you did, scratched my head when I saw they weren't where the other posts showed them, and stopped there. However, I still have a nagging feeling that something is wrong somewhere. My temp gauge never sees above halfway except in stop & go traffic, but virtually every time I park the car, the fan runs for about 10-20 seconds after I shut it off, not quite as long as the turbo water pump. It didn't always used to do that, and it didn't begin doing that in conjunction with any changes on the car. Does anyone know if this sounds consistent with a resistor problem?

I had a broken thermoswitch which is why I pulled mine and replaced the switch to maintain low and high-speed modes.

they are under the dash. I modified my 87+ body harness to fit my '86.

Dillon
FYI - Those small thermostats on the side of the heatsink/bracket are supposed to be wired in series with each resistor. Just need a small jumper wire from the thermostat to the resistor.

Dillion, I would recommend reconnecting the thermoswitches. That plate gets hot, hot, in fact, some of the rubber next to mine was melted when I started fishing around up there.

That's what it's supposed to do, the fan runs until the rad temp is cool enough to turn the rad fans off.

But I didn't always notice it doing that - and it's not like the ambient temperature has been any warmer. I started paying more attention to it after changing the coolant tank and all the coolant hoses (with the Lindsey silicone kit - minus the hose that goes to the turbo coolant pump because the stupid thing has far too small an ID to slide onto the pump - I ended up putting my rubber hose back on).
