Default 3.0 liter water pump on a 2.5 block..YES

My water pump had decided to start falling apart this last weekend and Yesterday started makign a horrible racket.

Unfortunately it was too late to get a 2.5 from worldpac for me to fix it after finding out what it was.

So... I just happened to have a new 2.7/3.0 water pump in my parts pile at work and thought I'd tear it apart and see what teh differnce was and if it would work.

After looking closely, the mounting flanges were identical. The impeller was about 1/2" larger. I tried bolting it up and tightening it down and fouind out soon that the impeller was interfering with the block somewhere. So I loosend it slightly and spun it. Took it off and found it was a small amount of aluminum that was cast into the block and teh top.

I thought well I can get rid of that quickly. A couple minutes later and the impeller spun freely..

After driving it I saw my coolant temps were quite a bit lower than before. So the bigger pump is doing a better job of moving coolant.

I'm not sure how this wil translate on a track car but I can't see how it will hurt.

Just thought I'd share

Funny because it was random and I did it all in 1 hr.

Now only if I would have inspected that darn tensioner pulley closer... OH well..That only cost me about an hr time too.

Surprised that you noticed a difference. Friend did that mod 4 years ago and he hasn't really seen any difference, with running nothing but the A/C condenser in front of the rad.

Just have to grind the block a small bit to make room for the larger impeller. No big deal.

I think at track speeds you'd just have more drag with a larger impeller at high RPM.

Shows what I know. I assumed this was already common knowledge. I have been running a 3L water pump for 7-8 years. I even drilled out two holes for the dowels.

How long before your water pump started to make any noise and it gave up the ghost?

Our race car just started to make a gravelly noise up front and assume its the WP.

We've got a endurance race this weekend -- and no time to change it but 2 months until the next one.

It didn't take long. Probably a few hundred miles.

In regards to whether it does a better job or not... I'll find out tonight as I have quite a few logs if past runs and I'm running it tonight so I will see a direct comparison. And no it wasn't hard, but I was happy I made it work in a pinch and thought I'd share...
