Default Machined 968 pistons ?.

In the interests of a budget 3.0 build I was wondering how many people had successfully used machined 968 pistons ?. Hartech in the UK did this but as far as I know that car hasn't done a lot of miles. On the plus side they are the correct material and relatively cheap, the minus side I would think removing material from the crown needs to be done carefully and are the rings suitable for forced induction ?.

Probably have thin ring lands too. I wouldn't do it unless you were going for low boost. Then I'd say..what's the point.

After awhile, it's just with it to get the right parts or build something out of the ordinary.

Not sure if 968 pistons are cast or forged or how much boost they could take.......

believe they are cast...... as such you are pretty much pissin into the wind with those pistons for boost.

I recently spoke to someone that ran a standard 968 with a supercharger for 4 years, dont know what condition the pistons were in when a rod put holes in the block and sump though.

You mean a budget 3.0L turbo? That's easy, do it right once and buy some Wossner custom pistons. Cheaper than doing it wrong multiple times.

That's what I'm inclined to do, just throwing some options out there to see who's done anything different.

Sleeve it, use Chevy pistons and offset grind the crank using Mitsubishi rods and have a 3.4l

That's different.....

Are these Chevy pistons you speak of good for a turbo application? Just curious.

Judging from photos the company 9FF in Germany did this on a twin turbo charged S2. But I agree with the others that it is a risk that should really be avoided.

Yes,
its doable at 6-8psi. David Chen of turbo gruppe did some 968s that way, they are fine if you know what your cc after your done.

Mike
I have a 3.o 8 valve head with valves etc. if your interested too.

Quick Reply: Machined 968 pistons ?.
