Hey Tony,
Apparently the new CTS-V-sport has a 3.6L DI V6TT. Basically the base Camaro/Impala V6 with some blow, rated around 420HP/430 tq.
I drove a rental Impala with the base motor and it was pretty good for speed, even in a boat like that. Managed 34mpg going uphill everywhere around the Bay area. Another cool thing on that engine is that the exhaust manifolds are integrated into the head - the specially shaped flow tubes per cylinder are cast into the head and there is a single collector bolted on. On the turbo motor the turbos are right off the heads.
Being a GM product...it'll probably come in a crate.

If I change engines, it will only so that the engine is Porsche.
And if I'm going to do that, it would be the 2014 Pamamera V6TT @ 420Hp.
Otherwise, it's LSx all the way.

Depends on how much time you spend on track, having done this for a few years now, I think your estimate of 3 years is too much.

Pulled the main and rod bearings. Perfect. They didn't want to even replace them. Put them back in.
Pulled heads. Replaced 2 valves and 2 valve guides. Did valve job since the heads were off.
Replace all valve springs as a matter of preventative maintenance.
The engine has between 2%-4% leak down after 3 seasons.
It's ready to go for 2 more seasons before I touch it again.
Total cost after 3 seasons? $2200. And probably 1/2 of that was unneeded work (pulling the pan to R&R the rod and main bearings which didn't need to be touched).
I will say that this speaks for the Renegade Hybrids oil pan and it's ability to control oil in the pan.

The car is in wiring hell.
Seriously... it's at Jordan Innovations in Irwindale CA getting wired.
It's about 70% done. The engine harness is made, the rear harness is made, and it's about ready to go through the firewall and terminate.
Also, they ran all the SS brake lines. There are a few leaks which have to be addressed.
They are hoping to have the engine started by tonight and the car gone this Friday.
I'm so running out of time to setup and test for the next season. This **** is killing me!

Update.... 11/27/13
The wiring is almost done. This was a big job to get this thing wired.
We still have to program the Racepak dash and the Smartwire (PDM) and calibrate fuel levels in the fuel cells. And we filled up both fuel cells with fuel from empty. It holds exactly 51 gallons in both fuel cells. That will give us our full reading. Next we well pump it out with the fuel pumps and see exactly how much comes out....
I need to get some laser engraved name plates for the switches.
The switches are:
Ignition
Fuel pump
Transfer pump (momentary)
Exterior lighting
ABS w/ warning light
Power Steering w/warning light
Cool Suite 1 & 2 (up/down)
Interior lighting (high and low)
Engine start
Fire suppression
The Smartwire will automatically attempt to reset the ABS or Power Steering pumps if a failure is detected (or it can be done manually with the switches on the dash).
The Transfer Pump will transfer fuel for a preset amount of time (probably like 2 minutes )
