Some of those "very unreliable" engines are running with more than 300.000 miles on the clock, and still perform.
Problem with porsche in general is when you cut corners on maintenance and not a lot of people spent much on maintaining porsche that they got for dirt cheap.
Big part of 944/951 magic in my book is its big 4 pot engine that feels different than other 4 pot engines.

Wow, I didn't see that thread back in '08.
IMO, an engine's stigma needs to agree with the car's stigma. I don't really see a 944 as an appropriate match for a Buick v6 turbo. Actually, no Buick engines at all. And when I think of v6s, I think of trucks and pretty much every vehicle made after 2000.
It started with the 924 and a VAG 4-cylinder. I always wanted a 968 with an RS2 motor, it's a fitting succession from the bastard 924. Plus, all the purists wouldn't have anything to say since those engines are built by Porsche.

I just see it as an alternate to a SBC swap. Maybe the S lost the cam belt $$$? Maybe he had a GN and wrecked it?
I saw my first Buick GN motor when,l I was working as a smog tech, lovely motors! It was illegally modded..but it passed!![thumbup](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/thumbup.gif)
I wouldn't do it but I think it's a cool car!

A V6 might have a little less low torque than a V8, though the turbo makes up for that...not to mention the Buick 3.8 is about the same weight as the 944 motor but sits further back as it is a TINY motor...

A car is just the body...the motor inside is not what determines what it is. By that logic, a Corvette would be the same as a C/K1500 or a van...

A car is definitely more than just a body. Unless all you're doing is looking at a picture of it online. As a driver, the engine has a lot to do with the driving experience - sound, response, power, etc. And as a tuner or tinkerer, one presumably wants an engine that is fun to look at and work on, and makes the whole car more like what they think it should be. Not just because it fits and has more power. That's just my point of view.

I don't think a debadged GN would fool me and I don't know what's out there where you are but my 85.5 944 N/A (with modded supenshion of course) is not a fast car. Pretty sure that GN motored 944 S is, at least as fast in the 1/4 mile as most 951's?

is there a shop which specializes in, or a straight forward swap for, an Audi motor install?
