A narrow victory, but it's still a win.. almost killed by the gas cap test. The 25mph completed its specs W/I 12sec of the test... that tells you how the numbers are "cooked". The cat will get pulled Friday.

Three tests w/coupons - $99
Parts - <$25
Bothering another RLister for garage time - Gawd only knows,
Silly amounts of labor - I'll just write it off as a love thing.

For the Eco Fems, how much fuel was burned to accomplish this? Ha!

Tests- HC / CO / NO, only 15mph numbers here...
3/14 - 34 / .07 / 930

3/27 - 37 / .08 / 726

5/07 - 46 / .10 / 792 -- 103 out!

Today - 50 / .16 / 685 -- Passed by 4ppm!

Next time, it will be a different smog shop.

Congratulations. Another two years' dispensation to drive your car!

Can you give us a recap your final successful procedure?

They are hitting us EVERY year now.As far as the standards getting tighter, that should be against the law.If the car can pass the standard for the year it was built it should pass.We need to revolt!

You bet, it's the least I could do for our community, but not much to tell other than in my first post.

Test you're gas cap.. that little 'eff almost cost me..

Exhaust was blanked and pressured up post-cat to find a serious leak in the 3" slipjoint pre cat, this leak made for a quick fix for my previous SMOG problem, a new cat was part of that fix also.

Checked plugs, temp range was correct, looked like a normal burn.

Intake and combustion Seafoamed between test two and three.

Fuel has been covered.

For a rolling dyno, check your tire pressures, maybe even consider some over pressure to reduce resistance.

changing the cat will give you magnificent numbers next time.

i was putting out about 700/1000 NOx at my last smog testing. replaced the cat, it went to 8/18.

Next time, new place with little car knowledge and with the new 2.5" installed...

At $305 a cat... I'm not playing this game.

Will the inspectors allow the cat' to be installed with flanges? If you make it easy for yourself to remove and clean the cat' with vinegar, it can be left in year round. Then clean it just before its time to smog it again.

Oh yeah, gas cap.
My friendly smog guy once started testing it and stopped early advising me, that it wouldn’t pass. I remembered it passed 2 years prior, so I asked him, if he had some silicone spray. He did, I sprayed the slightly dirty O-ring in the cap and asked him to try again and sure enough, no further problems.

Part of the smog challenge is finding a shop, where you can have a good rapport (repore) with the owner. The “reasonableness battle” should be fought with the politicians.

I always take a close look at it for cracks, etc. but haven't really come up with a way of testing it. I've seen expensive tools available for this, but haven't come up with a decent homebrew way to test it. Anyone?

*UPDATE* 2014

Today the one-pass cat goes back on. Replaced the gas cap Oring after a near failure on the last biannual test, and maybe this is a good time to sillycone thincoat that just for grins. New oring and filler neck from Sunset, car is garaged so UV/heat is minimal.

Glad I checked this thread.. tire press, Pzero sidewall is 51psi - I think I'll take it up to 60psi for the run.

I'll check O2 for dithering.

Still need the adapter for the laptop, have the Zeitronix and not using it so I should add that to the list.

Are you doing a STAR check? Be prepared for an evap system test...that is, "if they can see your charcoal canister"...

Always a Test Only here (STAR = retards building red tape), still the stock canister. Am I missing something?

Replaced the gas filler neck with the oring, suspected it was leaking but the cracks were just cosmetic.

I'll be going to the same shop I have for years, the guy used to drive a 951 and I think he knows what to do..
