I just had my smog test done yesterday and my test results was actually much better than 2 yrs ago.

My normal routine:
Oil Change
New Plugs
New Rotor
Mixture of 91 Oct and 100 octane
Drive for 20 + miles

This test:
Oil Change
Cleaned Plugs
Cleaned Rotor
Mixture of 91 Oct and 100 octane
Drive for 20 + miles
Lowered Boost to no boost.

One thing to note: My car is driven barely 1000 miles a year.

It's funny. Once a year you do this smog check. so you're kind of limited to engine mods in a way.
do all this cleaning and changing filters ect. once you pass. You either set everything back to normal or leave it.
Say you leave it, and you fail smog next year.. so you have to get a full service every damn year

I find the longest, steepest hill I can and run up it in 4th or 5th gear WOT around 40-50mph a few times and get the cat nice and hot.

With the smog numbers I got last month, my car's putting almost nothing into the air other than noise.

Every two years actually, "gross polluter" is every year and CA can put you in that category if they want. I skipped putting my go-fast stuff back in the last time (injectors, cold MAF intake, DME with real chips, etc ) just because with even the stockish stuff it was a dizzying CA screw job.

I've written much on Renn about my CA smog work.

Last time, smog mech pointed out that the red silicone under the wide band type clamp to seal the pre cat joint... now I put a couple of layers of aluminumized tape over the joint before the clamp goes on. Total seal.

At the beach.. it's either into/out of the surf.. I do the run hard and hot idle waiting for the test - I have more experience at this than I'd like to admit.

And yes, I've looked into registering in dyno free counties.

Me too. There are areas where smog is not needed at all unless you sell.

Close family live about three miles away from a dyno-free county, change of address would be a simple fix.

i can help with advice or repairs if anyone is having smog woes in socal / san diego. I still have my enhanced CA smog license and still work on 944/951 as often as possible..... even though i work for TESLA now. my car is still a work in progress... time for plumbing.

The CA DMV posts a map showing which counties (or parts thereof) are subject to which smog rules. Here's a link.

Mind if I join you guys? I'm heading out to have breakfast at Alices tomorrow with the Bay Area Breakfast Club then maybe join you guys. Haven't hung out with 944 guys for awhile now.

Send me a pm with location if possible.

2 years later and I still haven't passed smog. I'm about to throw in the towel on this car...

Do you have a link to whats going on with it?

We need an economical time-share to join or a affordable time on a pre-test machine. Getting an auto tranny on your resistration.. and changing it every couples of years would work too.

I've been putting a stock chip in along with the stock injectors/fpr/afm for testing... Has worked well, but a hassle every two years. Not sure if this approach will work with modified displacement ...
