Blown turbo...

Follow dnovak's thread. He's coming up with some innovative stuff.

Other than that, if you don't have access to machining stuff modern stuff is out of the question.
Vitesse has a good, fast spooling turbo. It's pricey, but I've never heard of anyone complaining about the turbo.
You could try Evergreen as well. I have no experience with them, but I've heard they do great things with the stock turbos.
PS: 14 lbs at 4800 rpm sounds like you have a leak. More psi does NOT equal faster spool. It means a faster blowing headgasket lol. Pressure test your intake system. Listen for leaks. The exhaust headers on these cars are notorious for cracking. That would result in a serious lack of spool. You should be feeling the big '80's kick in the ***' right around 4000 rpm.

A k26 should get full boost much lower than 4800. If you want a true direct fit (i.e., able to use the stock j-boot and all) then look for a 'cheater' k26/8 turbo offered by Vitesse and others. You'll get more oomph with good spool. A good electronic boost controller will help you get the most out of that Tial too...

I figured the boost lag was a result in the turbo going bad, I'm seeing oil on the intake where the cold pipe meets. Prior to this I was achieving full boost at around 3800. Thanks for replies,

Ive been looking on the site for some information on the k26 cheater, can anyone enlighten me on the matter? I think I would like to go this route. Additionally, do you think my turbo spooling late because of configuration or intake manifold? I will have to take a look at that when time allows. Hmmm

That's a great question. I always think the same thing when people (like me) throw out numbers. Truth is, I can probably get 15psi at 2k if I put it in 5th, left the hand break on a little and found a steep enough hill. My 1 bar by 3k was in 4th on level ground, with no braking and good tire pressure.

I'm not interested in investing a lot of money into the car. I was rearended last month and the insurance totaled the car. I'd like to be around 280 horse and hit 1 bar around 3k. The engine was just rebuilt by European Autohaus.
