Default Transmission Noise and driveline whine...with Video

What am I going to need to replace, how bad is it to drive in this condition, what will really go bad if don't fix right away???

Here's the play by play:

13, 20 &25 seconds cycling clutch in and out.
30 seconds let clutch out and rev in neutral (sounds like a cold diesel engine knock)
45 seconds press clutch in and rev in neutral (for comparison)
56 seconds, see 30 seconds description.
1:07 seconds, engauge 1st gear with parking brake on and load up transmission
1:21 seconds, engauge reverse gear with parking brake on and load up transmission.

I recently topped up the transmission fluid so the level should be okay.
Also when driving there is the load/no load transmission whine...

My dad said that that "cold Diesel" sound sounds like belts? But he's not sure.

Don't really think it has anything to do with belts... in the transmission... belts and tensioners were done 10000 miles ago, car has ~75k on it.

Thanks,
Sounds very much like the drivetrain in my NA, she has sounded like this for 60K miles... my guess is torque tube bearings...

Topped up trans fluid? to what level?

it SHOULD be 6-8mm below the bottom of the fill port... not even with the bottom of the fill port, and what fluid are you using? I notice a distinct difference when running fresh Swepco 201 compared to any other fluid...

8mm below fill hole, Redline MT-90.

I might drain it and try the swepco stuff...

Have heard good things about the redline...

Where are you located? I have a galon and a half of Swepco sitting in the garage... if youre close enough fill er up and if you like it, pay for the fluid you use!

Definitely sounds like the torque tube bearings to me. Mine sounded exactly the same and I got it rebuilt and now it's fine. I shortly replaced transmission after to LSD cause reverse gear was shot in my other transmission.

I wish it were that easy... I'm in eastern Canada, Nova Scotia. MT-90 has about 11,000 miles on it so it should still be good.

How long can I drive it with this condition? I will redo the TT bearings soon but will I hurt anything else in the mean time?

Your close enough shipping wise to Constantine in Florida to consider one of his torque tubes. I am very happy with mine. If it's the torque tube thats the issue.

951north, did you end up pointing out where the noise is coming from?
do you think it might be the throwout bearing?

No i never figured it out. still driving it like this.

i'll add some more here, when driving the driveline noise is like this, pressing and letting off the accelerator you hear a machining sound, and it pulsates with the "bouncing" or surging of the car when the accelerator is closed. When clutch is depressed sound is gone. when car is in neutral sound is gone. worse in lower gears. Think I might change transmission fluid...

I have 5 951s, one with a 968 transmission and an S2, 3 with fresh built transmissions, and they ALL make this noise! I think the only other bearings are in the TT, but I can't understand why they would make that sound...

That's what i was thinking. 951 owners are a rare breed, those with multiple cars even more so. i've tracked it in this condition to no detriment. Guess I'll keep driving, hell i only put 3-4k on it a year... when/if it ever becomes a problem I'll have it towed home and fix it... thanks Jon.

The rattling at idle with the clutch engaged is fifth gear rattling around. A previous S2 and the current turbo both do it. Have and always will is what a dealer told me with the S2 almost 20 years ago. I've never heard a viable explanation for it. Drive it and enjoy it. If it bugs you, depress the clutch...

The local 944 guys say that noise is how you know your transmission is working. When it stops, that's when you need to get concerned.
