A nicely done 3.0 951 w/ stand alone, suspension , brakes, seats , wheels and cosmetics is easily 40 -45 k including the car.

Compare that to the performance bargain of the decade, a 13 Mustang Boss Laguna Seca for similar money brand new or for 15 k more a 13 Cobra and the tables are turning against you in your scenario , and yes, both turn easily or better than a 951 and one does a genuine 200 mph......

Just saying.... but I do agree with the satisfaction associated with building your own car.

Much as I love the 951 it's a no brainer really, an easy 500 bhp and 4wd.

That's funny how many people who do not have the nerves and/or cash to build a proper 3.0 are waiting in line to diss the concept.

You can keep your Mustang or whatever muscle car all you want, it will never have the cachet of a vintage Porsche - I know how a well set up 951 goes and I don't care much about a modern Mustang. For that kind of cash I'd buy an early 70s US coupe and drop in it some Nascar engine. At least it would have some character, and much less plastic than a new Mustang or even a 996.

If you want to just get in and drive, don't get a 20 year old Porsche - or any other old car, for that matter.

That depends on how you build your 3.0. I plan on beating the crap out of mine when done. My 2.8 is in the car now , and getting close to starting. Once I get it tuned in I'll be starting on my "STROKER" 3.0. It should prove to be interesting.

I should have been clear and under the disclaimer made the following note

none of these rules, norms, physic laws apply to Sid also known as SIDKO funny 9 years ago many including myself thought that using the 951 as a drag car was impossible and you proved many including me wrong, I hate you

A Big Plus 1 on that comment

I had muscle cars, sport bikes, drag cars, and shifter karts , but these P cars , are just plain fun and affordible fun at that.

If its built right you can beat it . and it still all porsche .
Got a LUV that , especially if you build it you self

Here's my advice on building a 3.0L. Don't do it, or at least not right now.

If you plan on slowly building your car, pick up parts that can be installed and used with the current stock block and head. These would be things like exhaust, and other boost management devices, larger fuel pump, a turbo that may be slightly oversized for the 2.5L, or an interim used turbo, engine management that can be re-tuned when the displacement is increased, injectors....
Collecting parts over time that are not immediately usable, like pistons, crank, a machined block, etc... you just end up with lots of $$ tied up in parts that you cannot use and can be potentially damaged while in storage. If instead, you save the money, when the time comes to pull the trigger on the 3.0L engine, it can be done quickly to reduce the amount of time your car is off the road. But I think when you get your car in the 350rwhp range, you will not feel the need to spend the extra for a 3.0L engine. Your Dad's SRT8 should be thoroughly dusted by a 350rwhp 951.

I built my car over time by buying unused or barely used parts that were sold off from other peoples abandoned projects. I saved some money this way, vs brand new parts, but it still left a decent amount of cash tied up in a car that I could not drive.

Like the number sticker says "I love haters"

What do you mean "drag car"? This is a DD that gets to drag race. If it were a drag car it would be a full block fill, running on methanol at 50psi... It would also be trailered to the track. Nope, not a drag car...

Don’t make the ‘mistake’ of comparing prices for cars in the US. It will only bring you to tears…

Really, anyone contemplating a 3L is doing it because they really want to, not by comparing it to other cars. I would refer to Sean’s (JET951) turbo S2 motor build for one that is on the ‘Budget’ side of things. By this I mean he has built it himself and done all the fab work too. This brings the costs down immensely. In addition to the 3L motor to start with you need Pistons / Rods / Intake / Turbo / Injs / Engine Mgmt system but if you can do it like Sean did it will remain remotely affordable. Check his thread. https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...-together.html
