Default Tire suggestions for stock '86 951 daily driver?

I blew a right rear tire on my stock '86 951 daily driver a few hours ago during the commute in to work.

The car currently has Dunlop SP Sport 2000E 225/50 ZR16s on the rear. Phone dial wheels. Does anyone have a suggestion for me on replacements (I need both rear tires)? I always like to dip into the reservoir of experience here before I make a purchase. I understand Dunlop doesn't make ZRs any more.

These will be used only for daily driving. No track use, although it's possible someone might steal the car and occasionally exceed the speed limit. I don't need the absolutely top of the line, but I'm not bottom fishing either. A decent middle of the road tire on price and performance would probably suit me.

Thanks in advance.

I have a quoted price of $308 for the two tires mounted and balanced Dunlop VRs (156 mph speed rating) to replace the ZRs. Does that seem reasonable?

Thanks for any comments.

I believe there is a thread here listing the available tires for the stock 16" rims. May be worth a quick search so you can have your vendor compare prices. I am sure there is some first hand experience with each brand as well....

I had Dunlop sports on my old wheels. They were a pretty hard tire.....good for tread wear, not so much for traction.

$308 out the door for a pair of tires mounted and balanced sounds like a good deal to me!

Thanks.

I thought that was a pretty decent price, also. I remember spending over $200 once for an emergency delivered and installed tire when I was on the road.

Look into Continental Extreme Contact DWS. They are a great all around tire.

I agree with (86 951 Driver) I have the Conti's Extreme DWS and they are a great tire for the money. I also ran the Sumitomo HTR Z3's and they are a very good tire for the money. All things being equal though, I would opt for the Conti's

We have Conti Extreme DWS on my wife's Mazda3 and I'm pretty impressed with the tire. It even works to a certain extent in the snow.

If you will never drive the car in the winter or really cold weather go with the DW. I have heard the DWS is a softer tire with a softer sidewall so it is a bit mushy compared to a straight performance tire.

I have the DWS on my M3 - which I drive year round. They are a very nice all around tire - great tire wear, and surprisingly firm for an all weather tire. For a summer tire I like the sumitomo HTRZ III. Good (not great) all aroud performance at a very low cost.

I just went with Sumitomo htrz3 all around. Great tire for all-around performance. I using for occasional summer driving. 4 17 inch tires delivered (tire rack), mounted, and balanced for $580.

Look into the Hankook Ventus V12 evo, smooth ride, good grip. I got a set for my Audi (225/40-18) for around $500 from Discount Tire, they have free shipping too. It is a summer tire though.
