Now, it's a different story at autocrosses. On the tight stuff the 968's tend to outclass my 951, given that the 968's excellent low-end torque really helps it escape out of slow corners. Meanwhile I'm fighting to build boost.

What's your experience on the track and how long do you plan to keep the car? What is your goal? Do you care more about developing as a driver or more about having the fastest car at the track? What do you drive now?
I've owned both and have been tracking and autocrossing my modded 944t almost every weekend this year.
I'd say if you put the same budget and time into a 944t or a 968 over this season, at the end of the season you will be faster in the 968. With the lower cost of maintenance you will spend less money there and have more available for track time. With the linear power band and simplicity of the larger NA engine, you will be able to concentrate more on what you're doing and less on what the car's doing on the track. Right now 968 prices are just about as low as 944t prices, so why not?

And some more food for thought: the standard non-S turbo competes in PCA Club Racing's E-stock class... which is in the same group as the 944S2 and 968, and as I understand it (based on what a few folks have said here, along with friends of mine who run in PCA CR), the base Turbo isn't really competitive.
Like I said, you won't need power for driving on the track. Take it from someone who owns both cars. Get the 968.
Besides, the 968's are pretty ugly, so it won't hurt as bad if you tear it up!
