My car is a medium modded 951, and has been very reliable.
+1. I've never raced a 951, so admittedly I can't comment, but I tend to run circles around 968's at DE's. I'm pretty heavily modified, while maintaining a street legal, reliable car.

Now, it's a different story at autocrosses. On the tight stuff the 968's tend to outclass my 951, given that the 968's excellent low-end torque really helps it escape out of slow corners. Meanwhile I'm fighting to build boost.

What's your experience on the track and how long do you plan to keep the car? What is your goal? Do you care more about developing as a driver or more about having the fastest car at the track? What do you drive now?

I've owned both and have been tracking and autocrossing my modded 944t almost every weekend this year.

I'd say if you put the same budget and time into a 944t or a 968 over this season, at the end of the season you will be faster in the 968. With the lower cost of maintenance you will spend less money there and have more available for track time. With the linear power band and simplicity of the larger NA engine, you will be able to concentrate more on what you're doing and less on what the car's doing on the track. Right now 968 prices are just about as low as 944t prices, so why not?

It isn't. S2's for the most part dominate SP3, and they run better in E. FWIW, here is some interesting reading from Racer's Edge (who happens to own about 11 of those class records in an S2). Karl Poeltl wrote this, and he cites David Murray. Doubt any of us would pass those guys at DE's. http://www.racersedgeinc.com/racerse...ject968_01.pdf

Like I said, you won't need power for driving on the track. Take it from someone who owns both cars. Get the 968.

Besides, the 968's are pretty ugly, so it won't hurt as bad if you tear it up!
