Default how hot is too hot for the DME

After an hour of spirited driving, my DME is quite hot to the touch (2 or 3 seconds of my fingers touching it, it's very uncomfortable, have to release fingers from the metal case).
Any track guys could chime in here, who have monitored their DMEs after a session.
What's acceptable?

Huh interesting thought. Haven't personally checked my DME temp after a track session ... I'll check the next time I go.

Check out my thread on the topic from 2004. This board sure has changed in The last 8 years...

the dme on one of our chump track cars gets so hot we had to install a dme cooler, otherwise the car will cut out. The cooler consists of a piece of dryer duct hose hanging out of the passenger window forcing air into the dme. without the hose the dme will cut in and out. With the hose, we can run a 24 hour race.

do you have aftermarket injectors? Some pple will use resistors in line to prevent them from overheating the drivers- i have a spare set if your interested.

And if you look at my old post for 2004, it was the ignition driver causing mine to heat up so much. I had an aftermarket do-hickey in the coil circuit that must have been over-taxing it.

Tom, I did read your thread from back then, when I searched on this subject.
But , it wasn't quite clear as to what was acceptable with regards to overall heat of the box; not necessarily specfic resistors/drivers.
I'm just wondering, for example with stock injectors (or larger injectors with resistors), if it's normal for the DME to get quite hot when the engine is pushed.

How about some one whip out an IR Thermometer (great piece of kit, ~$30 for a +/- 2 degrees unit (think Thermohawk 400) ) and get some #s. =)

I noticed that (too hot DME) a few years back, bought a small CPU fan, drilled a hole for it in the original back-plate, machined an additional back-plate with internal fins and “sandwiched” the assembly together with longer screws than the original back-plate mounting screws (as well as using thermally conductive paste between the two back-plates).

It works just fine. Unfortunately I did not take pictures during the installation, but you can see a corner of it in the attached picture.

Laust

PS I am running low impedance 72lb/hr Siemens injectors without ballast resistors.

I wonder if we could ask somebody that rebuilds DMEs; they might know how much heat would be acceptable

in Canada it should not run that hot after an hour with the temps we have been having...what is causing it to run so hot?

Give the guys at ecudoctors.com a call. They rebuild DME's and are great to work with...
