Any details on the issues? The fans and shroud seem pretty efficient if the rest of the system is squared away.

well it works when it wants to and some times it just stays on and kills the battery. so are there any aftermarket set ups that are better?

That is more likely a relay, as mentioned, or the temp switch on the radiator. There is a good writeup on Clark's garage that would be helpful for you. Cooling fan operation and troubleshooting. It will walk you through how to diferentiate relay vs temp switch. Good luck.

Yeah sounds like you have a relay issue, as others have already mentioned.

The stock 951 cooling system actually works pretty well if it's in good shape. Usually even with heavy track use, water temps are never the issue - oil temps are. And that's usually solved with a bigger oil cooler.

Not a recommendation but this company advertises upgraded 944 fans for $400. I have never seen another item like this so I kept the link.

if you cant justify the cost of a new relay (~$200), why not just wire a manual switch into the circuit...

There is a thread on here where someone fixed the relay. Some soldered joints were cracked.
