turbos, k26/k27

I realize that K-27 is somewhat of a generic term for a line of KKK turbo's. 10 yrs. back I used one w/8 size hot house. The 2.5L also had HKS adj. boost and APE MAF w/ahip designed to work with the K-27, that I bought from TPC. My HKS boost gauge would read a peak hold of 20 lbs. I assumed this was through the RPM range. I was told to have a passenger watch it carefully and that it shgould drop like a rock after 5000 rpm. It did. All the way down to 13.5 lbs. on the gauge at 6900 rpm. They are pretty old (design & development) turbos. I've also been told (same guy who told me it was gonna run out of steam) that they produce a lot of back pressure, power loss. The motor had a big surge at 4000-4500, but it was deceptive. That was the torque. After 5500rpm it did not pull nearly as strong. Not much h/p. I belive the rear wheel dyno figures were in the 290-305 range. Intake manifold was also X-honed. FPR was from a 944 "s", I believe. Those APE chips always had that too rich smoke at peak torque, even after burning 2-3 new ones. Again, that was 10 yrs. back.

Don`t forget are weak wastegate.
IMO the wastegate is what make a #8 not hold boost to redline and not #8.
With a strong wastegate even the #6 can hold boost to redline.(from what i have read)

Edman951:
I guess my mistake. I sold my old set to a listee up north that had maybe a similar name (?). Ha, that must have sounded really presumptious.
I beleive your theory about the wastegate is accurate, esp. if you have an EBC, just that a #8 hot side should remain efficent through a higher CFM.

I have a K27DR from powerhaus (P.O. selection) does anyone know what the specs are? It does hold boost to redline with my Tial WG, at any setting from 15-20 psi. I haven't tried setting it any higher.

I haven't seen any dyno-charts of a K27DR with over 300rwhp. So that seems to indicate that it's a K27/6 variety of some sort. Also heard that quite a few of the K27DRs don't have a left-hand threaded nut on the compressor-wheel and many of them have spun off and grenaded the turbo... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

Thanks Danno, That's reassuring...What would you (or others) recommend for a band aid (read: budget getting low for this years upgrades) improvement for this turbo until I swap it out next year? (besides checking for proper threads) #8 hotside with a chip change? Do you make chips for K27/8 equipped cars? And if so, what is the boost threshold before the stock injectors max out? (ballpark, I know dyno runs with a wideband are required for precise determination).

There are quite a few of cars with the K27/6 turbo that crank out over 300rwhp.
My old 951 did just over 345HP to the wheels with a K27/6.
I know several people that have done from 335HP to 345HP to the wheels on the K27/6 w/o any problems.
