Default Time to Get Real about Mileage

When I bought my 951 the previous owner said the mileage on the car was ABOUT 122K. Of course the odometer did not work. Not much documentation. I keep finding things like shown below that make me think the mileage is A LOT higher.

The shifter on the left is one I got from JOSH B that came from a car with around 163K (a least that was what was on the odometer). The shifter on the right is from my car.

My purpose in posting this is that I am just amazed how many cars seem to have just under or over the magic 100K. I know for me I would like to believe my car has 122K but I think the reality is it has well over 200K. I think as I get real about the mileage I will not be shocked when stuff fails. Not just from time but fatigue also. Not to say that low mileage example do not exist but I think they are rare. The odometer is just to easy to change on our cars.

My head gasket gave way recently and when I got it off the car the deterioration was bad, several guys said looks like it was the original, maybe not. Could have been replaced 15 yrs ago, or 10 yrs ago, no documentation so I really do not know. 15 yrs ago the car could have had 140K on it! Just saying...time for me to get real about the mileage.

Damn that's pretty bad! Gotta say you are probably right. I replaced my shift lever around 150k miles and it wasn't nearly that bad.

My lever was in worse shape than that, and it's got about 90k on it. I wouldn't worry too much. If you're still worried, just pull the engine and re-build it.

I am not worried, almost replaced everything anyway.

um..not sure you got my point. About 90K, are you sure?

I had a 84 na and the shifter looked a lot like the worn one, it had at the time about 135000, so bad the ring pin would not hold the arm to the shifter

All I'm saying is someone's car could have 500k on it, but be in perfect condition. Or it could have 35k on it, and a blown engine. Hmmm, now where have I seen that before?... Oh wait, here! So why does mileage matter? If something is worn, replace/re-build it.

My shift lever had worse wear than that at 80k...I don't know if its an issue so much of the car mileage as maybe just sheer age/ worn motor mount vibration etc

Wow, can't imagine the amount of play your shifter must have had. My shift lever was in perfect condition and I always felt it wiggled too much.

Whatever is on the odometer, just multiply times two and you've got it.

If mileage does not matter, why report the mileage (if you are not sure about it). Unless it is a one owner car or you have very good documentation IMO the mileage is suspect. This is my point.

I see stuff for sale all the time that says says something like "AOR tranny with ABOUT 96K". No documentation. Just saying I think the 96K should be dis-regarded in most cases.

I looked at another 86 951 a while back and the owner said he THOUGHT it had ABOUT 98K. Odometer did not work, pulled the car fax and the car had 92K last reported in 1996!

My lever looked pretty bad at 95K of documented miles....as well as records can be. 25 years is a long time to make things fuzzy.

Its apples and oranges, but aircraft logbooks are even worse. They have a way of saying what the owner wants them to say.
