Post DIY Heat shield for the headers

I currently designed a heat shield for the headers of my 944 turbo. I made the shield out of sheet metal from "Lowe's" hardware store. Its very simple to make. Its a rectangular piece that measures 4.5" x 15.5" The piece fits right underneath that water pipe and bolts onto the exiesting holes that the radiator pipe already has. Here are a couple of pics

Should work good RAD

One warning, it looks like you have original fuel lines, check them well and double check the small hose on the front of the rail, there have been many fires caused by these hoses.

Yup, I have been meaning to replace them soon but always put it off. One question though, how do you get the hose off because its crimped on? Do you just cut it off? And how do you put a replacement hose on there??

I did the exact same thing about one mounth ago and am sure it does a difference in under hood temp.
I also plan on doing the same thing on the turbo side to help reduce the heat soak onto the intake manifold.Just waiting till i need to remove the intake for something else...

RAD,

You do just cut the crimp off and new hoses are hose clamped on.

Speed Force Racing, has nice stainless hoses or you could make your own.

Get a mini pipe cutter. Back when I did mine, I didn't know these existed so I just took a hacksaw.

Hey,,a different heat solution if your interested; Jet-Hot coatings. I did my headers, turbo down pipe, and the intake manifold - the intake was done on the outside only, exhaust and turbo down pipe - inside and outside.

The cost was $134 for the exhaust, $80 for the intake, and $65 for the turbo down pipe.

I took temp readings before and after, the car had been run for 30-40 minutes, and ambient air temp was within 8° on the days the readings were taken. Taken with a laser temp gun, checked against my freezer gauge,,+/- 2°.

exhaust - before 486-500° @ the exit pt of the head. Afer Jet Hot - 296-310°

turbo down pipe - before 426-440. After Jet Hot 235-252°

intake - not much change, just a few degrees cooler,,but it looks great. What I did notice is that it cools off quicker after running the car.

I have put about 2k on the car since this was done and the headers still look brand new! The intake, I put bolts in all the holes, put bolts, washers, and nuts in the fuel injector ports; no problems.

Ski, I guess you got the return customer discount.

FedEx just picked up my intake and master cylinder heat shield, on the way to Jet Hot.

Was that not only the small hose on the fuel rail?

I had good results with a dremel and cutoff wheel discs.

Tazman,
If the shield is vibrating, just bend the parts of the shield away from the metal that touches it. On mine, I made a horizontal curve bend downwards on the top section.

Anyway, Glad ya liked it.
