Post which trans. fluid / gear oil to use?

86 951 5spd tranny, with ext. oil cooler and a Torsen (quaife) LSD. according to:

<a href="http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index.php?page=index_v2&id=31&c=4" target="_blank">http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index.php?page=index_v2&id=31&c=4</a>

I should be using SAE 75W90 (not NS) since i have a limited slap -- but are they refering only to factory / clutch style LSD setups? so does that change since i have a gear-based torsen style unit?

this is all soooooo confusing. the shop that did my tranny a while back said they used "Mobil 1" and frankly i don't trust them anymore after a lot of stuff which has happened (unrelated to the tranny, it works great). i'm dropping the tranny to swap it and my motor into the new chassis VERY soon, and want to change the oil in it while it's out... or, should i just leave it alone?

help!

I'd change it. I've used Red Line 75/90 in both my 901 boxes with no wear noticed on either quaife. Both have been apart for synchro replacement and diffs were checked. No tranny cooler and only sprint races. 8 years of heavy racing.

If nothing else, by draining the old oil, you can check for any little bits floating around from your rebuild.

Best of luck with the transplant.

Dave,

I use Redline High shock gear oil ... works great on my LSD. Ask Dave at Lindsey .. he turned me on to it.

I checked with the shop I rebuild in and they use Spwepco synthetic gear oil. I used that early on and then Red Line the last 2 or 3 yrs. My older bottles are not marked NS, but are GL-5+ for limited slip diffs. The ShockProof gear oil sounds excellent. I'm guessing superlight or lightweight for street and heavy for racing?

Too many options. Probably like everythingelse. Change it frequently and there should be no problem.

I've used both Mobil 1 synthetic and Swepco. Both have been a vast improvement of what was originally in my gearbox. I would recommend either.

ns is (i believe) for non-LSD cars...at least, according to paragon products:

RL75W90, For Clutch Type Limited Slip 5sp. GL-5 - the non NS oil.

so you'd want to use 75w90NS since you don't have an LSD. where i got confused / had a question was, can you run the "for clutch type lsd" oil in a non-clutch type (aka quaife) lsd car but i think i should be ok...

EDIT:

just talked to jason @ paragon - with the quaife, you run the NS (since it's not clutch pack style, no FM needed, which is bad for synchros anyway, and w/o clutches, you don't need to worry about chatter / lock-up).
