Depends on which TO4E, I have a TO4E 60 trim,3" inlet it required some grinding on the compressor housing and grinding on the throttle body screws, then the water line took a brass NPT adapter (bought a Lowe's) to clear the housing. Nothing hard just a little work.

Luke has a TO4E with 54 trim, 2.75" inlet that bolted up like stock.

I've been doing my best to keep up with all this turbo talk...but I'm assuming that the 60 trim would give a bit more ultimate power but slightly more lag? Is this correct or do i have it backwards.

Thanks all, I was trying to see what it would take to put the 60 trim NON HYBRID turbo. 600 is a lot better then 1500-1800. Can I make a hybrid myself?

I have been seeing good hybrid and non hybrid turbos on ebay for great prices. $500-700 for new hybrids and T3/T4 and T4. This brings up a good point.

I have been considering a good used turbo from maybe a wreck at the junkyard from Audi, Volvo, Saab, etc. Not sure how much fabrication would be needed, but have seen some online and at junkyards in great condition or rebuilt in the $200-300 range. Anyone else??

Technology is still moving a rapid rate on turbos. The newest you can afford. I hear the new twin ball bearing ones spin for quite some time after the motor has been shut off. Mine is a t60-HiFi. The alternator required shaving. The A/C compressor required same. Lots of heat shields. Sizing is an art form.

to answer the original question of what would it take to install one of these turbos.....sfr has a bolt up for true garret turbos available w/ their stage II header/crossover setup....expensive but a work of art. the guru 364 kit is going to have a true garret also so they my be offering the fabbed pipe as a separate item.

hey 86944turbo post some specs on that beast!

60 trim only flows like 5 lbs' of air more than a54 trim, but the 60 has a MUCH better map. The 54 and 57 trims are old school. THey work for some applications still though, but in most cases you should look at the 50 and 60 trims and forget everything in between...

the 60 trim will probably spool the same as my 60-1 hifi.

That Vitenese stage III or w/e, I am SURE that's a T 61. That things is compressing ALOT MORE air than a 60 trim and he's claiming full boost @ 3,6 to 3,800 rpm. ( EVEN with the larger valves. )

a 60 trim , or even the 60-1, i dont think would be capable of flowing that much air ( 446 rwhp worth ) because i'm sure that motor isn't using 100% of that flow, that the compressor maps show, efficiently.

im looking at getting a 60 trim TO4E from cheapturbo.com. Other then the garrett flanges, is that all the special work required? I dont see that a little exhaust welding will be that big of a problem. Is it OK not having it water cooled? (is it worth the 100$ to do so) and how will a non hybrid 100% garrett compare to the hybrids everybody sells?

I have had the same (original) question.

I think the answer to the original question is that it requires a custom crossover pipe and custom downpipe. That would allow the turbo to function. Some (most?) of these are not water cooled. So some way off cooling the turbo for a few minutes before shut down roasts the oil still left in the turbo and causes other problems. Turbo Timer would be one option. The Koklen turbos I believe don't have water cooling and work good, so it can be done.

My thought, (I've mentioned this before). Is that you could fab some kind of a crossover pipe and downpipe for less than the difference between the $700 and $1700 turbo. At the same time reduce the restriction in the downpipe certainly, if not also the crossover pipe as well.

Down the road, the next turbo would only cost ~$700.

Let's get away from the overpriced Porsche specific turbos...
There, I feel better now.
