Well.... if the person can't remember to not actually run the car w/o oil in it, they they shouldn't be working on the car in the first place.
I've done my oil changes this way for years without any problems.

that's a little scary, turning it over after draining everything.... lets just say i'm not a big fan, and would rather spend half an hour with some paper towels and simple-green than a few weeks replacing rod-bearings and sleeves I can see how the hole-in-the-top would, in theory, work, however i've tried it on a number of cars to no avail...

Drain the oil. Leave the drain plug out.
Remove the oil filler cap.
Take a hammer and a long phillips screw driver and punch a hole on the top of the oil filter. Remove the screw driver.
Remove the coil wire from the ignition.
Turn the engine over for about 10 seconds, 2 times (for a total of 20 seconds).
Now you can remove the oil filter and you will have no oil spilled.
Remember to lubricate the seal on the oil filter with new oil when you install it.

So I was doing the 10 sec engine crank and what do I see, a stream of oil shooting out over the fender and onto my patio <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> Still had to clean the car up and add the patio cleaning to this method.

As many already objected I would not take it as far as cranking the engine.

Opps...
Sorry...
You have to turn the motor over before you punch the hole in the filter! :-)
Turning the motor over pulls the oil out of the filter.
My bad!

Simply punching a hole in the filter won't work because of the anti-drain back valve.
You have to turn over the motor to pull the oil from the filter.
Again... you MUST MAKE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE COIL WIRE. You do not want to run the engine. You simply want to rotate the engine around, causing the oil to be pulled from the filter, so you can remove it without oil going everywhere.

I can't see how turning the motor over for 10-20 seconds without starting it should hurt anything. After winter storage, you should use this procedure to build up oil pressure before you start the car.
Since you have the coil wire off, why not leave it off until you have added your new oil, then build up oil pressure before starting. The net result would be less engine wear than a normal oil change, where you have low oil pressure for 10-20 seconds when you first start the car until everything primes.

Nordschleife Master
Isn't it better to yank the DME relay or the fuel pump fuse in conjuction with the coil wire so that we dont dump fuel into the cylinders??
I may just start doing this...
Any problems with having to prime the oil pump or anything??
Thanks a lot Tony!!

Waterguy:
You could leave it off to build oil pressure if you want. But it will build oil pressure in only a second or two. I'm not sure it would make that much difference.
Adrial:
I don't think it would be "better" in this context because the amount of fuel injected is trivial. But it certainly wouldn't hurt.
I've never had an issue priming the oil pump. If you do, it's easy to put some oil into the oil filter housing where the oil filter screws into. I haven't had to do this except with a new engine... where there's no oil anywhere in the system.
