Just got my 951, Have a couple Q's
I'm overjoyed...just had my 89 79k blk/blk 951 delivered today *happy dance* but I had a few newbie questions...car came with Autothority Stage II and 3" Test Pipe (mfr unknown), and despite having all books and records for service, none came on these upgrades, so I'm just making sure the right things are there...so far, car seems to boost at least the 2 bar shown on the gauge (I know it's inaccurate, just curious if this is right around the range associated with the stage II chip...14psi or so, correct?), and comes on around 3500 full boost, which seems right from what I've read here (though I'm curious what affect the test pipe ought to have on this). In addition, I saw someone post about the LBE and the banjo bolt associated with it...I have what appears to be the same banjo bolt, but I could not find info on whether this banjo was stock and modified with the LBE or comparable boost enhancer, or if the presence of the banjo alone would indicate the presence of some sort of boost enhancer...other than that, I'm pretty damn psyched...car seems mechanically sound with some minor cosmetic issues (dash cracking, and aftermarket dash cap cracking, few rock chips, nothing major imho) but these were some of the things I figured I'd verify before I start making assumptions about what to do next.
All help appreciated!

sounds like the correct boost, get an autometer or other gauge to find out for sure. use the stock banjo bolt with the lbe, it just has a hole in it. the stage 2 bolt has a hole with a carb. jet looking thing in it to retard the air signal to the wastegate, much like the lbe or other controller, just less efficient.

Boost gauge is ordered, should have it soon, but on the banjo, I'm assuming then that there IS a stock banjo bolt, which would indicate the possibility that the PO did not do the LBE or any affiliated mods.
Now onto a second question...upgrading the wastegate...is it possible to upgrade beyond the stock wastegate to a more durable and consistant unit than stock on an 89 without adding some sort of boost controller (Profec, AVC, etc) or are the two co-dependant?
TIA again,
Jason

My car has a 46mm Tial wastegate without a boost controller. The Tial is unlike other dual-port wastegates (that I am aware of) in that it has a boost-sensitive spring inside of it. I believe mine has a one bar spring. Installation is more involved since the dumptube requires some welding (or go through SFR for an install kit.) I may be giving up some performance without a boost controller but the car seems to run well as it is.

Does the upgraded wastegate provide obvious help w/o the boost controller? Seem to hold boost well and make boost earlier, or is this not something I should expect from just a wastegate upgrade?

Great to see another '89 turbo out there. I look'd a blk on blk prior to purchasing mine. Quite the stealth'r. Congrats on the new purchase. Her's a pic of mine. Got digital pics of yours yet. Love to see 'em!
Enjoy it and again congrat's!

This one was a long time in the making...took a lot of searching, but I feel like I did pretty well despite a few cosmetic issues...now I just have to sort out all the little things like the overheating issue...but I suspect air or bad fans, so not too worried.

If there is an LBE on it it would be staring you in the face when you open the hood. Go to lindsay's web site at http://www.lindseyracing.com/ to see a oicture of it. All stock cars have a banjo bolt, so that does not indicate an enhancer.

I went with the Tial because my first wastegate fell apart and the shop had the Tial in stock... In fact the original wastegate was probably on it's way out when I bought the car a couple months earlier, so a comparison wouldn't be accurate. Right now, I am looking for an additional internal spring for the Tial to get 2-3 more psi.

I just recently (last week) replaced the stock wastegate with the Lindsey racing unit, stock bypass valve with upgraded Lindsey unit, and of course added the manual boost controller.
The difference is night and day, but I had a bad wastegate that wasn't holding any pressure. I was only getting about .6 bar and it didn't get to that point until over 4k.
I have a Lindsey boost enhancer, never installed, for sale if you decide to go that route.
